What is your favorite number? I’ve always liked the number 7 and 9, but perhaps I should pick 4! Who knew just 4 ruffled peony blooms would fill up my whole photography space? We’ve been checking out peony patch and our plants are producing a bounty of buds!

Spring has sprung here at Black Acre Farms! One of the sure signs of the shift in the season is a full nesting box of eggs! Our hens are laying and my sweet boys are eagerly collecting colors of the rainbow. We have rainbows all over our farm — from our eggs to our flowers! I plant my garden beds by variety and by the colors of the rainbow. Doing so increases my efficiency when harvesting all of the buckets of blooms for our weekly subscription arrangements as well as our custom special occasion arrangements!

Balanced in beige. This grouping ranges in color from white to off white, to sandy, to fawn. Each tone unique to itself, yet overall lacking hue, color, and vibrancy. As summer rolls into August, the days and weeks can sometimes feel very beige. The day-to-day tasks and upkeep fly by on repeat. A blur of beige. The farm doesn’t wait, even when we feel equally beige. The farm craves attention. Some crops ending, some just beginning to pump out the blooms, while others patiently awaiting a reprise from the heat before they show their true workhorse status. But there is balance in the beige. It’s grounding. Its earthy tone connects us to nature evoking a sense of stability and reliability and hope. Among the beige, we hold on to the morning light awaiting the moment when the beige fades. Eagerly awaiting the next coveted bloom, the next hue of vibrancy whether it be an old friend or a new face.

Here on our cut flower farm, we proudly grow every stem found in our flower arrangements, but we aren’t solely a cut flower farm. Diversification has helped our farm and my two little boys thrive! One of Layne and Liam’s favorite things to do on the farm is to collect our chicken eggs. It’s a task that requires them to slow down and take care to place the egg down gently in the collection basket. Its been special to first see Layne take an interest in collecting the eggs while Liam preferred to feed the chickens, to now see Layne help teach Liam and encourage Liam to collect the eggs with care. Bless these sweet boys and their darling smiles, tender hearts, and helpful hands.

I find myself mesmerized by the shear volume of swirling petals in our blooms. Peonies always boast a p**f of petals and now our zinnias are blowing me away with their puff pastry like layers upon layers of petals. To be quite frank, all of our blooms are captivating both individually and especially paired together in an arrangement. I have delivered some absolutely gorgeous summer mixed arrangements this past week! I’ve documented them for my portfolio and cannot wait to share them in a more permanent manner shortly. I only include the crème de la crème of my crop in the stems sold. Certain elements have to be met for them to be rated sellable. I hold my bloom quality to a high regard. I consistently deadhead any bloom that does not meet my criteria. To me, there is no point in leaving such a bloom on the plant when the bloom will consume the plant’s resources to mature a bloom I know to be sub-par. I will longingly await the next breathtaking bloom!

Spring begins to warm into summer with the blissful ruffles of our peonies. The anticipation for the first bloom each year grows as our peony plants mature and put on a show — each year bigger and better than the year before! I’m already dreaming of next year.

Lately, while I’m out weeding the dahlia beds, my mind flits back to spring tulips — specifically this picture. After all, tulips were the last blooms that were harvested out of my raised beds. My photography style attempts to capture my blooms in a natural and unfiltered way. I adore natural, golden-hour light and I have consistently honed in on it. One evening, I was quite literally running out of time to capture the last of my varieties of tulips — not only were my blooms dwindling, but also the light was fading fast. Cue the moody tones captured here. I’ve put off sharing this image for ages because it deviates from the bright and airy style I typically post. But these muted tones are not inaccurate or deceiving. They simply are. It’s time to share these earthy tones and dramatic shadows that have been lingering in my mind.

The unseen process — in general goes as follows — seed, germinate, grow, harden off, transplant, grow, harvest, document, arrange, deliver, repeat. I methodically harvest and document my blooms. It’s peaceful. Capturing the beauty as I see it. Whether it’s an up close photo of a singular bloom or blooms grouped into an arrangement, my photos document my season, my growth, my progress. It’s impossible to capture the immense 3D beauty in 2D form. It’s this downfall that often holds me back from sharing more. And so if you bear with me, I’ll let the beauty of my farm unfold as documented.

• week 3 spring tulips •

When your parrot doesn’t silver. It’s an anomaly. It stands out in the field and draws your eye in. Each petal should have featured an ombré from white to light pink to a deep pink; however, this flower bloomed a solid, deep pink. The long elegant stem will gently swoop down and whimsically place the bloom in just the right location as the bud opens and the stem lengthens in the vase. Nature is so magical. I failed to document my silver parrots in my studio set up before they were delivered with care to my subscribers. So to commemorate the occasion, I’m featuring this unique beauty.

Nature is full of lines. Elegant lines in the tulip’s dusty purple stem. Delicate lines in the tulip’s dusty purple petals. Ridged lines in the tulip’s leaves. Do you notice them? Do they captivate you like they do me? Singling out one of my homegrown blooms is one of my favorite forms of floral photography. Unique details pop! I think I am most enamored by the dusty purple stem.

If this tulip was a scratch and sniff, you would think it was a magnolia flower! Tulips tend not to have a scent, so when they do, they are even more magical. Not a single one of these snowy white blooms left my home. The scent instantly took me back to summer walks among the magnolia trees and so I enjoyed them personally. What scent takes you back?
