Last year we were extremely fortunate to be chosen as one of the 72 farms to receive a Fund a Farmer Grant from Food Animal Concerns Trust (FACT). Fund a Farmer Grants are $3000 grants that are awarded to farms who are trying to improve the welfare and living conditions of livestock.
Our grant was used to purchase electric fencing reels, temporary fence posts, and a solar electric fence charger. With the new fencing supplies we were able to split our current pastures in half or thirds, which will more than double our available pastures for intentional grazing.
Intentional grazing is when we move our animals from field to field so the grass is not overeaten. This ensures healthy plant regrowth, plant diversity and grazing efficiency. It also improves soil health, by lessoning erosion and compaction from over grazing, while improved plant roots feed soil biology and build soil structure. Our animals health also improved from the the nutritional quality of diverse forages and parasite life cycles are being broken. Our animals are now grazing with similar ages so they are not competing with larger animals for food, water and space.
This grant was such a blessing for our homestead and has greatly improved the lives of our animals, our soil health and pasture management.
