Farm to cup traceability

Bali to NJ to Baker Mountain Roastery to Memphis to a good ol’ Michigan cup. Now there’s quite a road trip!

Spent a great weekend down in Memphis with most of my kids at our son’s house. He’s a fire fighter/paramedic for the city of Memphis so happy to keep him going with a little Baker Mountain roasted coffee. This time we also delivered some for a co-worker. We do love all of our 1st responders!

Friday morning on Baker Mountain.

The week’s not quite over, but you can see the finish line from here.

Coffee’s hot.
The morning air has a little softness to it.
And for just a few minutes, before the day gets moving, the front porch feels like the best seat in the house.

Maybe your week has been smooth.
Maybe it’s been one thing after another.
Either way, you made it to Friday.

So pour a cup, take a minute, and ease into the day.

There’s still work to do—but there’s no rule saying you can’t enjoy the morning while you do it.

Fresh-roasted coffee just hits differently.

When coffee is roasted fresh, those rich chocolate, caramel, fruit, and nutty notes have a chance to really shine in the cup.

That’s the flavor we’re chasing every roast day at Baker Mountain Roastery; coffee with character, not something that’s been sitting around for months on a store shelf.

Friday coffee thought

A good cup of coffee doesn’t happen by accident.

Somebody grew it. Somebody picked it. Somebody processed it. Somebody shipped it. And somewhere along the way, we got to roast it here on Baker Mountain.

That’s a lot of hands behind one quiet cup on the porch.
So this morning, enjoy it a little slower.

Coffee fact of the day

Those “coffee beans” in your bag aren’t actually beans at all — they’re seeds from the fruit of the coffee plant, often called coffee cherries.

Inside most coffee cherries are two seeds. Those seeds are removed, processed, dried, roasted… and eventually become the coffee waiting on your counter in the morning.

So technically, your morning cup started out as fruit.

Which means coffee is basically breakfast produce. We’ll stand by that.

How many farms are in your morning cup?

With our new Colombia Huila El Bombo, the answer could be around 100.

El Bombo isn’t some big sprawling coffee plantation. It’s made up of small family farms scattered through the mountains around Pitalito, Huila, many sitting between 1,600 and 2,000 meters above sea level.

Those farmers joined together through the cooperative to give smaller producers a better shot at reaching good markets and getting more value for the coffee they work so hard to grow.

All those farms come together to give us a wonderfully classic Colombian cup — smooth chocolate, toasted nuts, caramel-like sweetness and a little bright fruit to keep things interesting.

Sometimes a cup of coffee does have a much bigger story than being just another cup.
