The Guinea Love Story continues. Yesterday, Donna the Duck hatched 9 baby guineas and she's still sitting on eggs. We moved most of the babies to the barn where they will be safe amd grow to adulthood. In the meantime, Gerald is going back and borth between the duck coop where Donna is sitting and our barn, where Winnie is hatching babies. Winnie's partner is often out running around, so Gerald has taken over. This morning, he was diligently guarding Winnie. Initially, he was in front of the nest as shown in the video below, but later he perched himself on top of Winnie, which Winnie didn't seem to mind. Good Boy, Gerald!

Louise is the best mother hen! She and Thelma, who between them hatched 18 babies about 6 weeks ago, are diligent in their efforts to protect their babies as they now go outside the protected coop area during the day to explore and eat bugs. At the same time, Gerald the Guinea, who lost his partner Ginny a couple of weeks ago, stands watch and sounds the alarm when he sees a fox so that the babies can quickly go inside the coop area.

A tragedy and a love story. A few weeks ago, I posted a photo of Ginny the Guinea sitting on a nest of 17 eggs guarded by her partner Gerald. Despite our best efforts to protect Ginny, who laid her nest close to our garden shed, what we believe to have been a raccoon murdered her one night. Gerald was heartbroken. Since that time, he has made a few attempts to rejoin the other guineas but primarily has stayed down at the duck coop near where Ginny nested. When Ginny died, I decided to put her eggs under one of our Muscovy hens that had been sitting on one duck egg for about week, judging that the guineas and the duckling should hatch about the same time. Today, when I lifted Donna Duck off the eggs to check them, look what I found--the first baby guinea to hatch. Donna welcomed Ginny's eggs and has diligently sat on them now for over two weeks. I can't wait to see how many of the eggs hatch.

Welcome to our world, little babies! These two kept us up until midnight last night after their mother Kitty (Wells) went into labor. What a surprise to see so much white and all those spots! The little doeling is a fireball and was standing and nursing within 15 minutes while her brother struggled to manage his extremely long leggs and needed some assistance. Mother and babies are all doing well and interacting with their 3 cousins that were born earlier in the week.

We've been deluged with badly needed rain the past several days but had a brief pause yesterday afternoon, which allowed the fog to come in and embrace the valley below Old Rag. Just look at the brilliant green in its various shades contrasted against the blue of the mountain. This view never gets old.
