Spice of the Week: Barnacle Foods Alaskan Furikake 🍙🌊

Furikake is a classic Japanese seasoning traditionally made with nori, sesame seeds, sugar, salt, and dried fish flakes. This Alaskan version from Barnacle Foods adds a twist with kelp from Alaskan waters. They call it “Rice’s Best Friend,” and they’re not wrong.

It’s nutty, salty, a little sweet, and loaded with savory umami flavor. Sprinkle it on:
🍚 Rice and rice bowls
🍿 Popcorn (trust us)
🍜 Noodles
🥦 Roasted veggies

Or blend it into cream cheese or butter for an instant bagel spread or a topping for fish and corn on the cob.

We’re putting together boxes for neighbors who were displaced or had their homes affected, and we’d love your help to make them extra special.

Here’s how you can be part of it:
✍️ Stop in and fill out a card. Share your favorite spice and how you use it, or simply write a few words of encouragement. Every note goes into a box.
🌿 Help us choose the spices. We have multiple boxes to fill and so many spices to pick from, so we’d love your suggestions on what should go inside.

A home-cooked meal can bring a little comfort and normalcy back, and we want every family to open their box and feel this community wrapped around them.

Tea of the Week: Caramel Apple 🍎🍯

Tomorrow, October 21, is National Apple Day, and here in Washington, the apple state, we had to celebrate! Our Caramel Apple black tea blend tastes like a trip to the fall fair: crisp, sweet apple wrapped in rich, buttery caramel. (Moderate caffeine.)

Enjoy it hot on a chilly morning, add a splash of milk for a caramel-latte feel, or pair it with one of our new Biscottea shortbread cookies for the coziest afternoon break.

Spice of the Week: Sassafras Powder, aka Gumbo Filé 🌿🍲

If you’ve ever had a true Louisiana gumbo, you may have tasted this without knowing it. Filé is made from ground, dried sassafras leaves, a tradition that comes from the Choctaw people and became a staple of Creole and Cajun cooking.

What makes it special:
🍲 It’s a natural thickener for gumbo. Use 1 to 2 tsp per 4 cups of liquid.
🔥 Stir it in at the end, off the heat. Boiling it can make the texture stringy.
🌿 It adds an earthy, slightly woodsy flavor with a hint of root b**r.
🫙 Store it airtight, away from light and humidity, since the powder soaks up moisture fast.

In folk tradition, sassafras has long been tied to prosperity and abundance, a fitting addition to a pot meant to feed a crowd.

It’s National Baking Week, so we’re celebrating the tasty way: with teas that taste like they came straight from the bakery! 🧁☕

This week’s Tea of the Week is Cranberry Nut Muffin, a green tea blend with tart cranberries, toasted pecan, cocoa nibs, orange, and a hint of vanilla. Cozy, gently sweet, and like a fresh-baked muffin in a cup, minus the crumbs. (Moderate caffeine.)

☕ To brew: 1 tsp in 8 oz of 180° water, steep 2 to 3 minutes. Don’t use boiling water; green tea tastes sweetest a little cooler.

Green tea has long been a symbol of clarity and renewal, a gentle reset for a busy fall day.

🌀 Cinnamon Roll: caffeine-free rooibos with cinnamon, apple, and vanilla
