Hi there! We are a small family ran Highland, Highpark, and Hereford farm that is looking forward to spring/summer 2027 calves.

We have a small fold of 8 cows but looking forward to adding more as we go!

Really looking forward to next year’s breeding group. Found this beautiful homozygous Highpark bull from Ridge Runner Farm. He is naturally small and will always throw tipped calves. Cannot wait to see the color he brings to our calves our next go around.

Pretty exciting day over here. We knew one heifer didn’t take because we saw her in heat. We hadn’t witnessed any of the other girls but wanted to make sure. Three for three!!! Means next May we are expecting a Highpark and two black baldy calves.

Part of ranching are the hard decisions. Our silver girl, Magnolia, did not take with AI. We believe it was from chute stress and she’ll do better being live covered with a bull. Unfortunately, that means moving on from us. Breaks our hearts but she is thankfully going to a dear friend at High Country Ranch near by, so we will still get to watch her have babies. I know she’ll be the best mama and this is the right decision for her. She’ll forever hold a special place in our hearts as one of our first cows.

Successful AI day! All 4 girls were in heat, let’s hope they all take! Logan Marsh came out to do the actual insemination. Really hoping for 4 spring calves.

Tonight we begin pulling CIDRs, in a few days will be the actual insemination.
This process has been a little daunting. Neither of us grew up in this. We are learning everything from the ground up. But we both agree this is the life we want our kids to grow up in. To have value in hard work, to knowing where your food comes from, there are so many lessons to be taught. We joke all the time that 22 year Erik would have never seen this coming but I’m so glad he jumped in with both feet!
It’s been so intimidating learning this world and couldn’t have done it without all the fantastic people have met along the way.

It was an exciting weekend at Sage Bluff Acres. We officially started our Artificial Insemination protocol to synch all the girls up to breed in two weeks. First time doing it and learned a lot! Thankful for family and friends who came out to help us. Our shop (where the chute and pens will go) isn’t quite done yet so we made do with a temp set up. Maggie broke the tip of her horn which is why you see it wrapped. She’s good as new now. We are breeding 4 of them, two highlands and two Herefords.

Our surprise mama set the date for AI to be in August. Really excited for straws from Bluestone Ranch bull Kingley. He is a stunning, fantastic confirmation Highpark bull. We’ll breed two of our highland girls to him and hoping we get some beautifully tipped babies! Our Herefords will be bred to an Angus bull for some black baldy babes.

Since we had our surprise calf, I would love to hear what everyone keeps in their calving bag. Besides the obvious emergency supplies, what are your go to things that you have learned are invaluable? And what’s your protocol for things to give calves once they have hit the ground?

Yesterday was a day we won’t ever forget. We had our first calf on the farm and we had NO idea mama was pregnant. Turns out one of the Hereford yearlings we brought home two months ago was bred. ZERO clue. So when we saw her pushing in the pasture, we were shocked. Thankfully all is well and mama and baby are doing fantastic!
