The brainchild of Chef Tony Brown and his mom Marti, named for child/grandchild (you guessed it) Stella, the cafe opened in west central Spokane in February of 2012. The concept was/remains to offer sandwiches, soups, salads, and desserts made primarily from locally grown produce and ingredients focused on taste as opposed to simple volume. Everything is chopped, sliced, baked and served each day and sandwiches constructed after you order. Stella’s garnered local acclaim shortly after opening in 2012 and was routinely listed as a top cafe/sandwich/bakery shop in the Spokane area for many years.
Due to unfortunate lease issues in 2017 Stella’s moved to a second restaurant owned by the Brown family, RUINS on Monroe (a full scale restaurant-bar) also in the west central area and featured on Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive-In’s and Dives, Grocery Games, as well as the Food Networks Alton Brown’s traveling show (twice). Chef Tony is well known for his creative approach to cuisine and with a rotating and often international-themed menu, RUINS has become a local Spokane favorite as well.
In early August of 2019, Stella’s moved to the Saranac Commons building at 19 west Main in downtown Spokane to reopen in space more suitable for a sandwich shop and very similar to the original Stella’s on W.Broadway. The same cast of family characters (with the notable addition of Stella herself- now a High School student) and a few other key players opened for business on 8-12-19 at the new Saranac location. The intent is to pick up where Stella’s left off in 2017, stressing the same menu, local quality ingredients, and in-house preparation.
