🌱 Peppers are officially in the CAT Tunnel! 🌱

This week our team was drilling, planting holes, transplanting starts, and getting hundreds of pepper plants settled into their new home.
Every plant represents hard work, teamwork, and another step toward a productive growing season.

A CAT Tunnel is a simple, covered growing structure which helps create a warmer, more protected environment for crops.
Why grow peppers in a CAT Tunnel?
☀️ Warmer soil and air temperatures help peppers establish faster and grow more vigorously.
🌧️ Protection from wind, rain, and unpredictable spring weather reduces plant stress.
🍅 A longer growing season gives heat-loving crops like peppers a better chance to thrive and produce higher yields.
🐝 Better growing conditions mean healthier plants and more abundant harvests for our community.

We are excited to watch these peppers grow over the coming months!

Today, the first red poppies of the year opened at Red Poppy Farm.

For many, the Red Poppy is a symbol of remembrance, sacrifice, and honor for the men and women who have served and gave their lives for our country. For us, it is also personal; it is woven into the heart of this land and the mission we carry forward every single day through Vets on the Farm.

Vets on the Farm is the program, the land itself is Red Poppy Farm, a name which serves as a constant reminder of those who came before us, those we have lost, and those still fighting battles long after their military service ends.

Here, Veterans gather to heal, learn, work, laugh, grow food, care for the land, and rebuild purpose alongside one another. Every season planted, every hive tended, every seed started, and every life touched carries forward the spirit of service, resilience, and remembrance the Red Poppy represents.

The poppies blooming today are more than flowers.
They are reminders.
They are stories.
They are sacrifice.
They are hope.

We are deeply honored to have the privilege of continuing the legacy here at Red Poppy Farm.

Turning brush piles into soil-building power.

After the BioChar workshop, some of our team took what they learned and put it into action over the weekend by building their own BioChar burn pit and producing BioChar for personal use!

A huge thank you to the Phoenix Conservancy for the hands-on education, training, and encouragement. The knowledge shared during the workshop gave our team the confidence to continue learning, experimenting, and applying these climate-smart practices ourselves.

From waste wood to a valuable soil amendment, it is incredible to watch the process come full circle.
This is exactly what hands-on agricultural education should look like.

Yesterday’s weather may have been rain, rain, and more rain, but the greenhouse and hoop house crews kept moving forward.

Our team spent the day fertilizing with Tainio Biologicals products to strengthen root development, boost plant health, and support strong, resilient growth for the season ahead. From peppers to tomatoes and beyond, these plants are getting the care they need to thrive.

Some days on the farm are muddy boots and greenhouse walls fogged with rain, and honestly, those are some pretty good days too.

A huge thank you to Alex Case-Cohen, Production Ag Coordinator with the Spokane Conservation District, for leading an incredible Plant Sap Analysis class at our May Vets on the Farm meeting!

Alex did an amazing job breaking down the science behind plant health in a way that was hands-on, practical, and easy to understand. Our Veterans and community members had the opportunity to learn how sap analysis can help growers better understand nutrient deficiencies, plant stress, and overall crop health.

We are incredibly grateful for community partners like Spokane Conservation District who continue to invest their time, knowledge, and support into our Veteran farming community. Thank you, Alex, for sharing your expertise and passion with all of us!

Join us at our next meeting, Tuesday, June 16, 2-3pm, Spokane Conservation District (4422 E 8th Avenue, Spokane Valley.

Today we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Memorial Day is more than a long weekend, it is a day of reflection, gratitude, and remembrance for those who never made it home.

As Veterans, we carry the memories of those we served beside, and today we stand together in their honor. We remember their courage, their sacrifice, and the families who continue to carry that loss every day.

Please take a moment today to remember our fallen heroes.
