What a DAY! Started with a rad networking event and tour of the Clackamas Community College farm and a description of their programming which is INCREDIBLE- if you are looking to start farming, go no further. Wound up at a festival dedicated to motherflippin QUINCE (ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?) and ate the best treats and saw that yes, there are literally hundreds of other weirdos hyped about this fine fruit. Then, because goats, ended my day with a nice wee in the woods and some fencing in the dark at work.
I met rad people today, reconnected with an intern that I hadn’t seen in a decade who is running her own farm now 🥲, and got all of my steps in. What a TIME.

Today I learned how to put an auger on the tractor! I’ve always used simple tools and makeshift things to get by, partly because of cost and partly because when the big tools were available I was afraid to learn to use them. I’m leaning into the discomfort of being bad at things and learning new skills to make the job easier! Digging fence post holes has never been fun; thankfully the auger can do the big work now.

Have a summer illness? Add lots of fresh herbs to your bone broth. We often associate the winter with broth and getting sick, but summer sore throats and sniffles are always coming around. Thyme and oregano both contain thymol, a compound that reduces inflammation and infection. This broth is beef neck bones, carrot, celery, leek, garlic, fennel, parsley, rosemary, and lots of fresh oregano and dried thyme. I roasted everything but the herbs before I cooked it down for a richer flavor. Don’t forget that you should always roast your bones before making broth because raw bone broth tastes vile. Summer broth making is way better in an instant pot because it doesn’t make your whole kitchen sweat- you are sweaty enough!

It’s the most wonderful time of the yearrrrr! Garlic scapes are the flowering stem of hardneck garlic. You can gently pull them from the plant or cut them- you do you. They are delicious in pesto, sautéed, and grilled. I’m chopping mine up for my morning egg and greens scramble. They add a bright, garlicky punch and are snappy like a green bean.

These birds nests from our property are so sweet and intimate. They are made from pine needles, our dogs’ hair, and our hair as a soft place for fragile eggs to rest. We often talk about nature as if we are somehow working against it or bending it to our will, but nature is quietly always showing us that we are all living alongside each other. While I admire the birds beautiful song, the bird is admiring the nesting material that I grow right out of my head. If I weren’t here, leaving little bits of myself here and there, the bird would simply use something else to weave its temporary home. We too can be resilient. Every year is different- this year it’s aphids, cicadas, and drought but next year will be something else. It’s all a matter of checks and balances that goes on forever. The little bird’s nest is a temporary thing; our lives are too.

Half of the proceeds of the final plant sale day will go to mutual aid in Gaza through .our.homeland. Come support your local small farmer and help people who desperately need it. There are still so many plants to choose from! After the sale, remaining plants are donated to for distribution to local gardeners who may struggle to afford plant starts. Gardening, growing food, and our food culture are so close to all of our hearts. See you Friday!

Getting my garden space prepped for planting! My neighbors have a fenced plot that they offered me for the season and I’m excited to be growing so close to home. Today we tarped the space and moved approximately seven million cinder block weights (buns of steel coming up). Neighbor Matt spread compost and tilled it in beforehand with his very handy tractor (wow, they are incredible- who knew!?). Enjoy a sweaty selfie, sunset views with neighbor sheep, and a picture of the back of Neighbor Matt’s head. Veggies, fruit, flowers, and many more sweaty selfies to come.
