I recently saw a reel that suggested using soapy water in a Super Soaker (or other similar device) to spray wasp nests. I had an opportunity to put that to the test this morning when this was laying right beside our back door, full of angry wasps.

It worked SO fast! Forget buying expensive chemical wasp spray. I'll be spraying them with soapy water from now on. Make it hot soapy water just for good measure.

For the record, we leave them be if they're not bothering anyone but I'm not going to risk my children getting stung if there's a nest close to a door we frequently use.

I am still VERY new to soapmaking but I am so excited about this soap that I made yesterday.

I have only made dish soap prior to this. I couldn't find my tallow 🙈 so I used everything but the kitchen sink. 😄 It has olive oil, coconut oil, lard, cocoa butter, and castor oil in it. I was determined to use whatever I had on hand. I wanted to make it orange scented but I didn't have enough so I supplemented with lavender.

Now excuse me while I go render some tallow and make a list of the supplies that I need because this is fun!

What scent should I make next?

Do you save fruit scraps?

If you have the freezer space, you should start saving them to make fruit scrap punch!

I got just over 2 quarts of this beautiful juice from a gallon-sized bag of scraps I've been saving. Strawberry tops, half-eaten apples, pears that were getting too soft, oranges that kids sucked the juice out of -- all of those things and more!

I used a steam juicer but you could also boil them in water and strain.

Fill to 1/4 inch headspace and process for 5 minutes in a water bath canner.

I thought it was sweet enough on its own but I added a little bit of local honey per the husband's request.

Enjoy!

Oh, hey! Hi there! Thanks for sticking around.

I am terrible at posting over here. I couldn't tell you how many pictures I take with the intention of posting over here. 🙈 Life just happens before the Facebook post comes to fruition.

Anyhow, I worked in my chaos garden yesterday and I found a whole tabasco pepper plant hiding in the weeds. 😅 It's a volunteer. I have a couple of volunteer tomato plants as well but I noticed them a long time ago. This one was a pleasant surprise.

Have a great day!

My zucchini got planted late. Just a few days ago, I swear there were no zucchinis on the plant. Then I found this 2 lb 13 oz monster just laying on the ground this morning. 🙈

Isn't that just the most zucchini thing ever? 🙃

On my way to feed the chickens early this morning, I stopped to gather some mullein flowers. However, I had a little visitor so I decided to leave everything for today. 🫶🏻

Check out those pollen baskets! 😍

Our chickens gave us corn!

Since we combined our flocks a while back, maintaining the vacant run has been very low on the list of priorities. I was out hanging Japanese beetle traps today and spotted corn growing in there.

The scratch we buy from the Mennonites has whole corn in it and the chickens often leave some behind, therefore, they grew some corn!

I found 3 ears that were ready to pick. Unsurprisingly, it is not well-pollinated. I'll be giving it back to them but it sure gave me a good laugh when I found it. 😂

One of our geriatric girls has gone broody!

This is one of the Easter Eggers from our very first flock over 5 years ago. She's older than my son. ❤️

I guess we'll be setting up a maternity ward for her because she doesn't like it when other hens come sit on her eggs when she goes to get food & water. Besides, I have yet to confirm how many eggs she has and I'm pretty sure there have been more added since Saturday when she first started sitting. 😄

I am so pleased with my garlic harvest this year. 😍
