Nettle Valley Farm Nettle Valley Farm is a small farmstead in southeastern MN providing whole and half pastured pigs.

Our pigs get fresh pasture every week and feast on a corn/soy/fishmeal free feed made from certified organic peas and barley.

YOU GUYS this is a caterpillar!!!! I was checking out my sneezeweeds and I noticed this little pile of vegetation… I almost kept going but then I remembered what I learned in the documentary: there is a caterpillar that camouflages itself with flower petals or dead leaves or other kinds of vegetation!!!

Meet what I’m pretty sure is the caterpillar life stage of the Wavy lined Emerald Moth / Synchlora aerata! Smitten!

I’m finding plenty of second year garlic mustard plants that look like they were top killed during our spring burn but then regrew from the taproot. Uff da!

We have accomplished SO MUCH this past week with Marisa and Violet, our two new WWOOFers! We’ve been tending to the seed crops, pulling garlic mustard (of course) and this coming week we’ll start splitting wood and maybe even planting a new seed crop!

Very grateful for all their hard work, excellent questions and anime recommendations! 🥰 Buddy loves his new Aunties!

Welcome to our little valley, goats!!

Having our own goats wasn’t in the cards for this season for a variety of reasons, but the biological brush management continues in this 18 acre unit thanks to these 90 goats.

It’s our first livestock-free season in a decade which feels bizarre but lowkey kind of fun?! Like I’m playing hooky or something?! I’m excited to focus on growing seeds and processing a crapload of firewood this year…. And maybe even a weekend getaway or two 😎

Big thanks to Kyle, Tim and Alex from Diversity Landworks, I’m really excited to see what a big herd can accomplish on our land.

Yesterday I met some snow fleas! (Hypogastrura nivicola) Here’s what I learned:

- they are anime cartoon level cute
- they aren’t related to true fleas at all
- they have a special forked tail called a FURCULA that helps them jump!
- they are AKA springtails bc of the aforementioned furcula
- they’ve got a neat antifreeze protein in their blood that apparently scientists are studying to learn how to store organs for transplanting in a new way!
