EBA recap!!

Thursday we got our animals loaded which included 2 yearling bulls and 2 yearling heifers & headed to Harrisburg. We spent the afternoon checking in our animals as well as others. Checking in includes removed old farm ear tags, replacing them with EBA ear tags and reading the RFID tag that is in their ear to ensure they align with provided vet records.

Friday was an info filled day, we had a lot of awesome speakers with my favorite of course being our valley local Dr. Dan Kniffen! He spoke lots about pink eye which is something we as bison producers face often.

Friday evening we moved into an awesome dinner, awards and fun auction which is always a blast.. can’t wait to show yall our new hardware, when I get the pics back!!

Closed out the weekend with the sale, which went great. I tried my best to get our guys to pose for some pics at the end but they obviously were not amused.

So happy to catch up with some old friends and new ones too! See y’all next year

Stay tuned for next week’s Thinking Thursday🦬!

❓Thinking Thursday❓

I’ve told you guys a few times to go over & follow the Eastern Bison Association and National Bison Association and THIS is why! Learn more about bison from other experts themselves. I couldn’t not share their “Teachable Tuesday” for you guys to read up on too!

We’ve already talked about the speed & agility bison have, running up to 35mph! That’s faster than a horse.. crazy I know. Bison are able to run these speeds like the NBA stated due to their larger trachea, which enables more airflow!

I thought this was a great visual and awesome fact, hope you do as well! Now next week this time we’ll be getting settled in after checking in animals, including our own at the EBA winter conference in Harrisburg. Can’t wait to fill you in on our travels, animals, speakers and cool people we get to meet!

Stay tuned for next week’s Thinking Thursday🦬!

~TEACHABLE TUESDAY~ Let's talk about windpipes, or, more formally, the trachea.
Bison are runners, and they have the stamina to go at high speeds for long periods of time. In the photo below, you can see why. On the left is a bison trachea. On the right is a trachea from a beef cow. Both were the same age upon harvesting. The much larger bison trachea allows plenty of air to move in and out of their lungs, fueling their long-distance capability.
When bison run, their tongues move in and out of their mouth, which moves the air into the trachea and then to the lungs.
This large trachea works in conjunction with the bison's larger heart and lungs (compared to cattle), allowing their breathing to return to normal very quickly once they stop running.

❓Thinking Thursday❓

I know I know, the groundhog wasn’t too accurate on the weather prediction here in Pa & we’re all rather disappointed in the chilly, snowy weather recently BUT that does stop the fact that calving season is right around the corner!!

What’s something super basic, every living thing needs but we don’t put much thought into?? WATER!

Of course we know we all need water & so do these awesome animals but what can lack of hydration affect? Reproduction, which is something I definitely l never thought too far into. There are several factors that can affect reproductive cell quality in animals. Some of these factors include genetics, age, overall health and nutrition, stress levels, and certain diseases or infections. It's important to provide animals with a healthy environment and proper care to optimize their reproductive cell quality. Dehydration can indeed have a negative impact on the quality of reproductive cells in animals. When animals are dehydrated, it can lead to decreased semen quality in males and poor egg quality in females. Proper hydration is important for maintaining optimal reproductive function and ensuring the best chances of successful reproduction on both ends. So, staying hydrated is key for healthy reproductive cells!

We are incredibly fortunate to have natural streams from mountain runoff going through each and every pasture we have, some more than one. This ensuring these mammas to be have the best environment to produce our futures offspring! And because of that we’ll be seeing these “red dogs” in our pastures very shortly!

❓Thinking Thursday❓

Animals are each a part of a large animal family, your cat is a part of the feline family, your horse is a part of the equine family and our bison are a part of the bovine family.

Bovine is the scientific classification of animals belonging to the cattle family. The bovine group includes animals like cows, water buffalo and like I said our beloved bison! Have you ever noticed a cow or bison, chewing but they haven’t eaten in a bit? Well that is because they are ruminates, all bovine are ruminates while there are animals outside the bovine family that are ruminates as well!

What even is a ruminate? A ruminate is an animal that has a four-chambered stomach, which allows them to efficiently digest plant material. The process starts with the first chamber, the rumen, where the food is partially digested and mixed with bacteria. Then, they regurgitate the partially digested food, called cud, and chew it again. The cud moves to the other chambers of the stomach, where further digestion and nutrient absorption occur. This unique digestive system helps them extract as many nutrients as possible from their food. They often do this laying down because it helps them relax and focus on the digestion process. By lying down, they can rest their bodies and chew their cud more comfortably.

❓Thinking Thursday❓

EXCITING news this week! Our partner Shane over at Buck Wild Bison recently got a Cane Corse pup, everyone meet Axel! We care about our pets like they’re our children so let’s feed them good, let’s feed them raw!

Shane added a “dog food” section to the buckwildbison.com site, for your four legged besties to enjoy. Here you can find things like bison kidney (image 2), bison heart (image 3), bison bones (image 4) and more. We want our pets around for as long as possible, feed them the bison you love so much and show them how much you care!

Benefits of feeding raw:
- aids in digestion
- gives them all the nutrients basic kibble lacks
- dental health
- increased energy
- fewer allergies
… and soo much more.

Stay tuned for next week’s Thinking Thursday🦬!
