❓Thinking Thursday❓
I’ve told you guys a few times to go over & follow the Eastern Bison Association and National Bison Association and THIS is why! Learn more about bison from other experts themselves. I couldn’t not share their “Teachable Tuesday” for you guys to read up on too!
We’ve already talked about the speed & agility bison have, running up to 35mph! That’s faster than a horse.. crazy I know. Bison are able to run these speeds like the NBA stated due to their larger trachea, which enables more airflow!
I thought this was a great visual and awesome fact, hope you do as well! Now next week this time we’ll be getting settled in after checking in animals, including our own at the EBA winter conference in Harrisburg. Can’t wait to fill you in on our travels, animals, speakers and cool people we get to meet!
Stay tuned for next week’s Thinking Thursday🦬!
~TEACHABLE TUESDAY~ Let's talk about windpipes, or, more formally, the trachea.
Bison are runners, and they have the stamina to go at high speeds for long periods of time. In the photo below, you can see why. On the left is a bison trachea. On the right is a trachea from a beef cow. Both were the same age upon harvesting. The much larger bison trachea allows plenty of air to move in and out of their lungs, fueling their long-distance capability.
When bison run, their tongues move in and out of their mouth, which moves the air into the trachea and then to the lungs.
This large trachea works in conjunction with the bison's larger heart and lungs (compared to cattle), allowing their breathing to return to normal very quickly once they stop running.
