🦚Come along for a drive with Willow this morning. 🐎💨

🦚There is something special about sitting in the buggy, listening to the rhythm of the harness and watching Willow work. If you look closely at her ears, you can see exactly how much she enjoys her job. She’s locked in, moving with that effortless power we love in our Percherons.

🦚It’s not just about the drive; it’s about that partnership. When she’s out front like this, she’s not just pulling a buggy—she’s communicating.

🦚enjoy the view, and let’s head down the lane.

🌼A Great big thank you to our friend Ken Seims for capturing these photos of our halter horses at the Ohio State Fair

🌼 When we step into the show ring, it’s about more than just a pretty face. Halter classes are designed to evaluate the horse's conformation, ensuring they are built to perform the work they were bred for. Here is what the judges are keeping an eye on:

🌼Balanced Conformation: Ideally, the horse should be built in three equal parts: from the point of the shoulder to the withers, from the withers to the hip, and from the hip to the point of the butt. This balance is key to a functional, powerful frame.
🌼Structural Integrity: We look for straight, correct legs and healthy, well-formed feet. A horse's foundation is everything—they need the structure to support their size and power.
🌼Breed Character: A "breedy" head and a kind, intelligent eye are hallmarks of a quality draft horse. It’s that unmistakable presence and expression that sets a top-tier animal apart.
🌼Athleticism in Motion: Even at a standstill, we are looking for a horse that looks like an athlete. When they move, they should track straight and show that they are ready to work.

🌼At the end of the day, these are draft horses. They are bred to pull, to wear a harness, and to move forward with power off of their hind ends. A winning halter horse is one that combines this structural correctness with the heart and athleticism of a true working partner.

There is never a dull moment here at Windermere Farms! 🚜✨

Today, we’re sharing something a little different. Following in the footsteps of our father, Abe—who founded Windermere and has always had a passion for training oxen—we’ve taken on a special project.

A longtime customer reached out looking for a team of oxen for his granddaughters, and through our network, we were able to source this wonderful Brown Swiss pair. Meet Pop and Corn! 🐂🐂

They’ve just arrived at the farm, and while they’re currently getting used to the place while led by their ropes, we’ll soon be working with Dad’s guidance to get them trained to the yoke. Our priority is ensuring they are safe, steady, and ready for their new home. We’ll be sharing updates and videos of their progress as we work with them.

It’s a privilege to keep these traditions alive and help our customers find exactly what they’re looking for. Stay tuned for more!

👓Meet the next generation at Windermere Farms! 🐴 These two beautiful weanling fillies, Windermere’s Norma Jean( red halter) and Windermere’s Harmony,( blue halter) were born here on the farm this past January and are already developing into stunning young mares.

👓At Windermere Farms, we’ve been breeding, raising, training, and showing Percherons since 1962. Over these past 64 years, we’ve fine-tuned a system that gives our young horses the best possible start in life. We wean our foals between 4–6 months of age, then transition them into groups based on age and s*x.

👓Our fillies—Harmony, Norma Jean, Nettles, Odessa, and Matilda May—currently enjoy pasture life together, while our more rambunctious colts—Pinkerton, Mad Money, Master Plan, Torch and Hector have their own dedicated group. This social structure is a cornerstone of our program, helping them grow into confident, well-adjusted horses.

🌻So many of you have asked: How do we get a team of mares to drive in such perfect sync?

🌻The secret isn’t a quick fix—it’s consistency.

🌻When you see our team in the ring at the National Percheron Show, you’re seeing the result of hundreds of hours spent on the lines. Driving teams of horses is all about building a shared rhythm. By working them consistently, we develop a language of subtle cues that become second nature to them.

🌻Training a hitch is a process of fine-tuning:
Building Trust: The mares need to trust the driver’s hand and their teammates beside them.
Developing Rhythm: We focus on consistent tempo, ensuring every horse is moving with the same stride length and energy.
Communication: It’s about quiet, precise signals. When the training is consistent, the horses anticipate the movement before we even have to ask.

🌻It’s a team effort in every sense of the word—from the hours in the barn to the focus in the show ring. We love the challenge of bringing these mares together and watching them move as one.

🌻Have you ever wondered about a specific part of our training process? Let us know in the comments!
