Spring is a beautiful time in our orchard and in our maple woods....we love seeing the honeybees pollinating the pretty fruit tree blossoms, enjoying lovely wild flowers, and finding delicious mushrooms.

It's also a nerve-wracking time because we had some freezing during Apple blossom time, and we don't know how much damage we have until we see the fruit set....

Our bee losses were fairly heavy this year so we resorted to filling our hives back up with both package bees and nuke colonies. Today we are putting in nukes and hopefully we'll have happy and content bees in our hives in time to work the orchard in full bloom next week!🐝

It's been a busy spring with finishing up maple syrup and pruning, and transitioning to spring tasks: cleaning beehives and putting in new packages of bees, chipping up the pruned brush in the orchard, pruning grapes/currants/gooseberries, etc. so we've been forgetting to post.
Here are some pictures showing how each package of bees are shaken into the hive, then we sprinkle a little sugar water on them to keep them busy cleaning each other off and give them time to adjust being in their new home, we checked the queen who is in her separate little cage and pull the cork and replace it with some honey from the frames in the hive so she is temporarily blocked in there, until the hive calms down; the bees take care of her and eat the honey out of the cork area, so she can escape and move freely around her hive. Fascinating! 🐝

The weather has had crazy extremes this spring. We go from a blizzard TO days that are great for making the maple sap flow with freezing nights and warm days TO being too cold during the day for the sap to run TO being too warm during the night for the sap to run, so we switch back to pruning while wearing t-shirts!! We'll be out in the woods cooking today, but with these crazy weather swings, we don't know how much longer maple syrup season will last.....

With the warmer weather, we switched gears from pruning trees to getting set up for maple syrup. The crew was busy washing pans & tanks and repairing sap lines, so we will be ready to start tapping trees when the weather gets the maple sap flowing to start making maple syrup! We'll get back to pruning next week.

We started out below zero this morning and the winds were 16 to 20 miles per hour so Mark had the crew in the shop making apple chips and repairing our apple press, Mark went out to the wood and cut down some trees. This afternoon the wind was still up so we decided to split and stack wood. We're lucky our woods slopes behind a hill to the south east so we are pretty sheltered from the north west winds out here!
