Please do your homework when shopping for beef. As this posting states, prices for beef in grocery stores and even in restaurants have increased pretty dramatically; however, if you have been buying from a local farmer or rancher, you’ve likely not seen this type of increase. I know we have not increased prices much at all over the past year or two. So, if you think local is too expensive, shop again. Plus, there is the added benefit of your dollars staying and working in your local economy. PLUS…you know exactly where your beef is coming from and how it has been cared for. If you need a pack of ground beef, a couple steaks, a roast for Sunday dinner, or you’d like to stock your freezer with a whole or half beef, come see us or give us a call, or call a rancher near you. Your dollar will go farther in more ways than one!

Beef prices are separating sharply from the rest of the grocery basket in 2026. USDA’s Economic Research Service forecasts beef and veal prices will rise 9.8% this year, compared with a 2.5% increase for food purchased at grocery stores.

July beef and veal prices were already 9.4% above a year earlier. By comparison, pork prices were up just 0.5%, while poultry and dairy prices were slightly lower than last July.

USDA currently projects another 5.1% increase in beef prices for 2027, although the forecast range remains unusually wide.

It’s the day I wait for each year. Yes, the heat will return. No, fall is not around the corner, but the promise of cooler days is here. The promise of tomorrow is tangible.

We are reminded that the summer of life is fleeting, and that it is the summers of those who have come before that have built our legacy. This is where we take a breath, count our blessings, and double check the plan for the winter ahead. Everything changes. It always will, but there is a golden thread of connection that runs through the generations who have farmed this land. Every day is a gift.

These ladies will disappear into the shade soon, but they are out grazing and browsing this morning before we progress too far toward the hot afternoon that awaits. Where are you fall? We are ready!

President Trump’s announcement today is a frustrating step in the wrong direction for American cattle producers.

According to a truth social post the U.S. will allow an additional 300,000 metric tons, approximately 661 million pounds, of imported ground beef into the country over the next 90 days without out-of-quota tariffs, with the stated intent of selling it 25% below current market prices.

That comes at a particularly difficult time for Arkansas cattle producers. Drought, higher input costs and historically low U.S. cattle inventories are already complicating decisions about retaining heifers and rebuilding the cow herd. Many Arkansas producers are also preparing to market calves right now.

We know import policy can move cattle markets quickly. Following the October 2025 announcement aimed at lowering beef prices through increased imports, Arkansas steer calf prices fell $41/cwt in just two weeks. Today, feeder cattle futures are already reacting.

American cattle producers have weathered years of challenges while continuing to supply consumers with high-quality beef. Creating additional downward pressure on cattle prices may provide a short-term response to high beef prices, but it does nothing to address the underlying problem of historically low cattle inventories. It could also make producers more hesitant to invest in rebuilding those inventories.

If the goal is a stronger American beef supply, producers need the market confidence to build it. You don’t grow the American beef supply by making it harder to raise American beef.

Blessed with another day. This is the sunset from our first little homestead—now the spot Matt & Morgan call home when they are not in Baton Rouge. Time moves quickly, but the view never gets old.
