University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension and UK Master Grazer will host the Summer Forage Tour Aug. 11 at Josett Farm in Springfield, Kentucky. The tour begins at 3 p.m. EDT and will feature practical grazing strategies for improving beef cattle pastures.

"This Summer Forage Tour will highlight how a dairy‑turned‑beef farm is addressing toxic tall fescue with novel endophyte stands, putting native warm-season grasses like Eastern gamma grass and switchgrass into productive use, and rotationally grazing 350 acres with intention,” said Chris Teutsch, Ph.D., Extension forage specialist at the UK Research and Education Center. “Producers will be able to see these strategies first-hand and ask questions about implementation.”

A special thank you to David Humes for hosting and allowing us to tour his livestock facilities, and James Hale for explaining how they operate, sharing his knowledge on the industry, and educating other cattlemen!

Does preconditioning pay? Results from the Advanced PVAP program say yes. Across 2,603 calves and 77 closeouts, producers added an average of 185 pounds and $247.86 per head in net value over selling at weaning — and calves sold through breeder-sponsored sales earned the highest premiums. Interested in participating? Contact your local county ANR agent or KBN facilitator.
