The Legislature’s Appropriations and Financial Affairs Committee will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, January 20, at 1:00 p.m. on LD 2094, An Act to Authorize a General Fund Bond Issue to Support Maine’s Agricultural and Forestry Sectors.

This proposed bond would invest in the long-term strength of Maine’s farming and forestry sectors—supporting working lands, rural economies, and the local food systems that benefit people across the state.

Public input is an essential component of the legislative process. Farmers, foresters, food producers, businesses, and members of the public are encouraged to participate by attending the hearing or submitting written testimony.

Learn more about LD 2094 and how to submit testimony:

Submit written testimony for the Tuesday, January 20, hearing:

International Year of the Woman Farmer — 2026

Look pretty and smile.

That’s what resilience looks like
when there’s no childcare,
no paid time to heal,
and no margin for a body
that makes life and food at the same time.

Women farmers break first
because we stand where everything meets —
treated like overworked soil:
depleted,
expected to keep producing,
never allowed to go fallow.

This isn’t failure.
It’s pressure.

Organic farmers must label the truth,
pay to prove it,
and keep paying as they grow —
while chemicals stay unnamed
and their costs drift downstream
to bees, bodies, and water.

Truth is expensive.
Extraction is subsidized.

January, 2026 —
praised,
without provision.
Still, I’m here.

Not because it’s easy.
Not because it’s profitable.

But because if we can’t feed ourselves,
we don’t get to call ourselves free.

— Emily Dickinson

Fork Food Lab is one of the few places in Maine that turns crops into usable, safe, school- and market-ready food — and it supports dozens of small businesses doing exactly that work.

We’ve spent time there recently through Farm & Sea-to-School efforts, alongside people who are deeply committed to feeding kids and building something durable. What’s happening around Fork right now is serious — and it matters far beyond one building.

If we want local food to be more than a slogan, we have to protect the infrastructure that actually makes it work.

Standing with Fork Food Lab and the many businesses who rely on it.

Warm drinks, homemade mushroom soup, and a little mushroom magic at Garden Glow Café, inside The Gallery at Morning Walks in Kennebunkport, Maine.

Today was full of mushroom soup, mushroom coffee, and hot cocoa infused with Lion’s Mane, Reishi, and Cordyceps — along with fresh mushrooms, dried mushrooms, and mushroom powders for soups and smoothies.

Huge thanks to Devon and Garden Glow Café for the warmth, care, and beautiful space, and to everyone who came through today.

If you missed it, Garden Glow Café will be serving up more goodness tomorrow. 🍄🌿
