McDougal Orchards is a seventh (going on eigth!) generation family farm in Southern Maine dedicated to providing high quality fruit and high quality time spent outdoors. Visit our orchards to pick over 40 varieties of apples, peaches, plums, pears, pumpkins and more, and don't forget to stop at the Farm Store in our historic barn to pick up apple cider, pre-picked fruit and a variety of local products.

Our first few varieties of plums and peaches are blooming! This time of year we always help out our japanese plums by cutting a few flowering branches from each, putting them in jars and placing them under the other variety to hopefully help with cross pollination, especially since our Shiro plum is half-an-orchard away from any compatible pollinator!

Finally got a nice warm day yesterday to do some grafting! *Thumb is wrapped in electrical tape for safety, not because of an injury!*
We took some Tolman Sweet scions from our last remaining tree this winter to propagate more of that variety and expand our heirloom section. We are also working on converting part of a less productive row to a different variety (Pristine) that ripens closer to the early season varieties next to it.
Hopefully the grafts will take, only time will tell, but we will be keeping an eye out for green buds in the next week or so!

We are grateful that our trees are moving along slowly with the recent temperature changes and frosty mornings last week. Our hearts go out to the growers south of us that are dealing with frost damage and crop loss.
