Springtime means weeding time! With landscape fabric, there's less weeds to manage, but the crops are planted into holes we burn into the fabric for them, and those holes have to get weeded every now and then.

It's been a beautiful week for working in the field, and Ryan and the crew have gotten so many heat-loving crops transplanted! Here, Layna is transplanting cucumbers. The white coating on them is a kind of clay that acts kind of like a sunscreen for tender seedlings!

It's finally our Seedling Sale weekend! Eleanor and I have worked in the greenhouse since last February to grow from seed the 10,000+ plants to sell over the course of the next several days.

When we started our first seeds of the year, Eleanor just turned three months old, and she's grown and changed so over these weeks in the greenhouse. While hanging out in the pack and play and on the baby gym while I work, she has refined her mobility skills, getting good at rolling and scooting around on her front and now her back. She has learned how to sit up and even grab objects while sitting. She has tasted the juice of the clementine Ryan was snacking on, her first food experience!

Eleanor entered the greenhouse in February hardly more than a newborn. Now, she's starting the process of becoming a little kid!

I've grown and changed as a mother, too. I've gotten comfortable using my buckle baby carrier, wearing Eleanor in it for up to four or five hours a day as I work and taking her in and out of it countless times a day for diaper changes, feedings, and to allow her to play in the pack and play and on the baby gym. I've learned how to help her fall asleep in the greenhouse, through traffic noise and fluctuatjons in light and air temperature, and stay asleep as I work with her asleep on my chest. I've learned how to ask for help from others, so I don't burn out as I try to do farmwork while simultaneously taking care of a baby. Even my appearance has changed! Gone are the long sleeve button-up shirts and ponytail braids that farmed in since 2012 or 2013. Now I wear nursing tanktops and a bun (a hairstyle that's harder for a baby to grab onto!

I entered the greenhouse in February as a new mom, uncertain of what life after maternity leave would be like. Now, I'm a working mom who's feeling more confident and comfortable in her new normal!

Did you know that you can get flower seedlings at our Seedling Sale this weekend? We're vegetable farmers, so when we first started growing seedlings to sell, we naturally focused on vegetable and culinary herb plants. But due to popular demand, every year, we grow more and more different kinds of annual flower seedlings, and this year, we've got a dozen options for to choose from, including fan-favorite Benary's Giant Zinnia!

Why just flower seedlings and not full-fledged flowers? Well, to be frank, we'd have to heat our greenhouse earlier in the winter and invest in growing plants under artifial light to have blooming flowers for you in mid-May, and that just doesn't seem like a good use of propane or money!

But we also believe that plants rushed to bloom under artificial light are not as sturdy or long-lasting as the flower seedlings we grow under natural light in our greenhouse. When you buy from us, tou have to wait a little longer to have flowers blooming in your garden, but the investment in a sturdy, healthy plant that is maturing at is natural pace is worth it!

Here's the flower seedlings we're growing for the Seedling Sale:

Alpha Calendula
Tall Blue Boy Cornflower
Sensation Blend Cosmos
Shimmer Celosia
Pinwheel Marigold
Queen Sophie Marigold
Bloody Mary Nasturtiums
Kaleidoscope Mix Nasturtiums
Monstrosum Tall Strawflower
Roggli Riesen Strawflower
Fireworks Sunflower Blend
Mammoth Sunflower
Benary's Giant Mix Zinnias

This Mother's Day, we'd like to say a special thank you to our moms, Sharon and Dianna. Farming seven days a week while simultaneously taking care of a baby can be challenging. When one of Eleanor's grandmothers comes to the farm to babysit for a few hours, so much more farmwork happens! We know how lucky we are to have parents nearby who are willing and able to help us with our baby!
