🌱 The Wensleydales are on pasture, enjoying their first fresh grass of the season. After a long winter, spring pasture provides nutrient-rich forage that supports their health and wellbeing, while giving them the chance to express natural behaviors like roaming and selective grazing.

At Birdsfoot Farm, managed grazing is an important part of our regenerative farming practices. As our sheep move through pasture, they help fertilize the soil naturally, encourage healthier root systems, improve water retention, and support biodiversity above and below ground. Thoughtful rotational grazing also helps prevent overgrazing, allowing fields time to recover and grow stronger.

For us, grazing season is about more than green fields and happy sheep, it’s part of a farming system that works with nature to build healthier soil, healthier animals, and a more resilient farm ecosystem. 💚🐑

✂️🐑 Shearing Day ✂️🐑
It’s that time of year again, our fluffy friends are getting their fresh spring trims! While it might look like a big makeover, sheep shearing is essential for keeping our flock happy and healthy.

Our Babydoll sheep benefit from shearing by staying cool and comfortable as temperatures rise. Their dense wool can quickly become heavy and hot, so a good shear helps prevent overheating and keeps them grazing with ease all season long. Plus, it reduces the risk of pests and skin issues, win-win!

Our Wensleydales are getting their inaugural shear at Birdsfoot! Known for their long, lustrous locks, they also need annual shearing to maintain their wellbeing. Removing their fleece not only keeps them comfortable but also allows for fresh, clean wool to regrow. We hope they’re ready to thank us during their first Long Island summer!

There’s nothing quite like seeing their post-shear glow-up 😉

By joining our CSA, you’re becoming part of the Birdsfoot Farm community for the season.

You’re purchasing a weekly portion of the farm’s harvest in advance and helping support the farm’s work throughout the growing season. Your investment at the start of the season directly supports seed purchases, supplies, and other early costs that keep the farm running when it needs it most.

As a CSA member, you share in both the abundance and the challenges of farming. Weather, pests, and other factors can affect crop yields from week to week. When the season is plentiful, we celebrate that bounty together!

We, the farmers, are committed to providing a diverse and plentiful share each week throughout the growing season. We care deeply about thoughtful land stewardship and organic growing practices, and we do our best to make each week’s harvest a rewarding one. 👨🏼‍🌾👩🏻‍🌾
