🌶️ From Swamp Sauce to Jalapeño Citrus…

I’ve learned a LOT over the last year building Backwater Heatworks. One of the biggest lessons has been that sometimes the simplest advice can make the biggest difference.

Here’s a little story most of you probably don’t know.

The Jalapeño Citrus sauce you’ve come to know and love was originally going to be called Swamp Sauce. 🐊

I thought it was a pretty cool name that fit the Backwater brand perfectly.

Then one day, a mentor of mine in the BBQ and hot sauce world asked me one simple question:

“What’s Swamp Sauce?”

So I started explaining it. It’s a jalapeño-based sauce with bright citrus flavors, a little heat, and a whole lot of flavor.

And about halfway through my explanation, it hit me.

Why am I making people guess what’s inside the bottle?

People know what jalapeños are. People know what citrus is. Put the two together, and you’ve already given someone a pretty good idea of what they’re about to taste.

And just like that, Jalapeño Citrus was born. 🍋🌶️

I’m sharing one of the very first bottle renderings alongside what our label looks like today.

It’s pretty cool looking back at how far things have come, and I’m sure I’ll look back a year from now and realize how much more I still had to learn.

Sometimes the best business advice isn’t complicated. It’s just someone asking the right question.

All set up here in Daytona and ready to feed 150 hungry riders! 🍻🔥

This weekend marks my 10th year supporting Team Left Hand for the MS 150 and my 5th year cooking for the team.

This year is a little different. It’s the first year Backwater Heatworks is sponsoring the food, which makes this one pretty damn cool for me.

What started as showing up to support a great team and a great cause has turned into a tradition I look forward to every year.

Now it’s time to fire up the grills, feed some hungry cyclists, crack a few cold Left Hand beers, and cheer these riders on.
