It's been a while since I have come up with a new and original cocktail of my own, but driving home tonight I was inspired. The warm days of summer had me thinking of watermelon and that led to this drink that I'm calling the Watermelon Empress (thanks Darice!). I think I'll make this again as a spritzer for those days coming up at the pool. 😁

Watermelon Empress
2 oz Empress 1908 Gin75 oz watermelon juice75 oz fresh lime juice5 oz simple syrup
3 basil leaves

Combine all ingredients in cocktail shaker. Muddle basil leaves to release the oil. Shake with ice until chilled and serve in a coupe glass.

Those of you who know me know that I have My List of places to eat or drink in the St Louis area and a month or so ago, Black Mountain Wine Bar came through my social media feed and it was added. Today after suffering an egregious and terrible injury to my pride and ankle, I treated myself to an early summer solstice snack and beverage.

This wine bar is 100% casual, no pretention. The wine is amazing, the pours generous and the food put me into food coma.

I enjoyed the House Select Prosecco and an ever so smooth Argentinian Malbec. The olives hit the spot but the BLAT sandwich with its bacon, lettuce avocado and tomato was the star that put me into blissful food coma right in my seat.

I need to come back and try more wines and more food. And Mondays they have wine tastings. This is my new favorite wine haunt right in the heart of CWE. Come on guys, let's go back next week and have a good time!

Food Truck Friday is a hard and fast tradition for me, as many of you know. It's held over the summer months from May to September, usually on a couple weeks each month. The food truck lineup changes every time, giving those of us who go a new set of options. Now, some people might be excited to see their favorite truck come back, I choose to make sure I get my food from different trucks each time, otherwise I would be forever eating poke bowls from Buzz's Hawaiian Grill every time (yes it's that good). This obviously doesn't apply to Narwhals, who makes up for being there every week, but having two new drinks to enjoy each time. That's my excuse.

Some people go all out with tables and coolers of extra stuff, but I go simple. Blanket, camping chair, basket of things like napkins, wet wipes and a couple extra drinks. I always have my Kindle because, while this is always open for people to just invite themselves to with me, I get there early to avoid lines and enjoy the live music as I read.

I'm so excited to have this back this season, looking forward to each lineup so that I can gorge myself on food again! Is it June 9 yet?

Where do you go when you have a hankering for Cafe du Monde and instead you're having spring fever in St Louis? Go to Dutchtown and get beignets and chicory from of course! Fresh made, they have an assortment of the simple, traditional beignets to more extravagant and even savory. Covered in enough powdered sugar to please the palate but not the dentist and made fresh for every order, they will transport you for a few moments to the Big Easy.

You can sit at the window bar and watch life go by along the streets, read a book, and fill yourself up on some fried dough that is sure to send you back to the couch for a blissful food coma.
