...one horse and a tiny garden...

It all started a few years ago, with one horse and a tiny garden and a dream to live a more simple, self-sufficient, and healthy lifestyle. We had just moved from the city limits of Hope, Arkansas back to the country home where Samantha and I (Daulton) had spent our first two years of marriage, which is also the place I grew up. Growing up here, my parents always called it “the farm,” but to be honest, we never really did anything “farm-y.” It had probably been the 1960s since even a garden had been planted on the place, which would have been my grandparents, the Mays. Sam and I wanted to change that. So, we moved Sam’s childhood bestie-the horse named Tex-from her parents’ house to our place, got us some laying hens, and put a few various seeds in the ground, hoping the Lord would help us make something edible grow from the dirt. The bite of that first tomato grown from our garden along with a some farm fresh eggs from our awesome chickens convinced us that this was what we wanted to do with this place. We then wanted to come up with a name for our little homestead farm-y thing we had going here. When my grandparents and greatgrandparents were living here, everyone around here called this place May Hill. We thought it only appropriate to pay homage to the long family history we have here dating back at least 100 years, and finally decided to call it May Hill Farms. So here we are, years later, with a much bigger garden, from which we grow all kinds of stuff. Our flock of chickens has grown and shrunk through the years, but at any given time, we have layers and/or meat chickens on the premises. A farm is just not a farm without a few chickens pecking around. We also have a small herd of dairy cows. We have had a variety of other animals here since we started, from goats to donkeys, and even a turkey at one time. And of course, our little family has grown, as well, with now 4 kids (aka free labor) to help us in our crazy, hair-brained farming ideas. We aren't sure if we actually accomplished that simple part, if anything it's more complicated. But as the sign says in our house, this is our circus, and these are our monkeys. We have more crazy ideas "hatching" soon, so stay tuned! Thank you for visiting! We hope you feel right at home here at May Hill Farms!!
