Happy Friday eve. I hope this post finds you well.

This pic was taken yesterday while hiking with my hubby. We went to Crabtree Falls, located in George Washington National Forest; it’s one of the highest waterfalls east of the Mississippi River. I highly recommend this gorgeous scenic hike if you live in or are passing through Central Va.. The hike will not disappoint and either will the drive, it’s truly stunning. You won’t regret it, I promise!

I’ve decided to take some time off from IG. Things on the farm are slowing down a bit and now seems like a good time to focus my attention on other aspects of my life. I promise when CRF returns, there will be goat, chicken, and cow pics galore.

A darn good start to this Monday morning. I woke up (late) to the barn already opened, hot coffee, and a cozy fire. Thank you my sweet hubby!😘

It’s a beautiful bright sunny but chilly one today in Central Va.. We’ve got a few tasks on the calendar today; a meeting with the carpenter for the cabin reno, and I want to come up with a plan to make some window boxes (pallets are a girls best friend) for the barn (I’ll update the progress in stories).

Good hump day morning!☀️

October has flown by and we’re nearing the end of the #homesteaddocumentary and #fallhomesteadshare photo challenges. 🍂

Today’s themes “What’s Still Growing” and “Work In Progress” (fallhomesteadshare)

Pinch me y’all...but my dahlias are “what’s still growing”. I’m talking dinner.plate.sized blooms. If you plant it it will grow, or in my case, cross my fingers and it might grow. I’ve learned a lot about myself and gardening the last couple of years; we have a love/hate relationship so to speak and my cultivating skills are most definitely still a “work in progress”. I’ve learned to enjoy the gardening journey, to be grateful when something sprouts up through the soil and not beat myself up when it doesn’t.🌱

What’s on my kitchen table? Sorry, no pumpkins, squashes, or gourds ~ YET, but ALWAYS flowers. These dried hydrangeas are straight from our yard and in vases all over the house. Can I talk for a minute about what’s under my table? Zero, zilch, nada... I’ve been searching for months for that perfect rug, but haven’t found it yet. I will continue to charge ahead and not give up hope!🤞Any advice from you decorating gurus?😬

⚒Repurposed Treasure⚒

We had a dilapidated outbuilding that had beautiful wood finishes and wanted to somehow recycle it. When my hubby built our garden boxes, he had the great idea💡to use the old boards to help jazz them up. I think he did a fantastic job! 🙌

This “Spinach and Three Cheese Stuffed Shells” is a Conway River Farm favorite. When the weather makes a turn for cooler temps, this is the number one most requested meal. I will say, I’ve made it with and without spinach, and prefer it without. I’m a huge fan of the leafy green but feel in this recipe it gets a little soggy and earthy flavored whereas the basil adds a bright freshness to the dish. That’s the beauty of cooking, you can tweak and prepare to your liking. Trust me it’ll tantalize your tastes buds.

What a beautiful Virginia five-star day! Today’s theme on this day 14 of the #homesteaddocumentary photo challenge:
“Simple farm life” featuring the #simplehappyfarmlife with the lovely June over

Truth is there’s nothing simple about farm life. We are challenged daily and constantly problem solving. People ask all the time (usually with an eye roll) why Paul and I left the city for a more rural lifestyle. I honestly didn’t have a clear cut response, except that we wanted a quieter slow-paced life. Having lived on our farm for 3+ years, I now have several answers: some of them obvious, like this view; some not, for instance assisting in my first-ever goat births, almost loosing one of our does and her 3 kids during a complicated delivery and knowing in a stressful situation I could rise up, raising our own egg laying chickens, growing and harvesting our own vegetables ~ having a (almost) freezer full 😉 of fresh pesto and roasted squash, (I’m already excited about next years garden), raising bees and collecting our own honey, and looking up at the night sky to stargaze.✨ All things we would never have experienced living in a city.

I am so in love with this land, our animals, and dream of its potential. I finally feel I have a sense of purpose.

Raise your hand if you have multiple animals on your farm?🙋‍♀️ Do you sit and observe them interacting with one another? I do, all.the.time. Is it always a happy fairytale ending coexistence, absolutely not! At times, the goats get frustrated with the chickens, the chickens loose patients with our barn cat, and our barn cat gets put in her place by both the goats and chickens. For the most part, all our animals (dogs included) get along really well. This pic was taken when our hen, Salem, needed some cuddles (it was a pick me up NOW peck that left a bruise -ouch!) and our baby goat, Annabelle felt it should be a group hug.🤗 Animals really do amaze and teach me everyday; patience, forgiveness, and love are the lessons so far. I can’t wait to find what else I can learn from them.🤍

Bees were the second addition (goats came first) on our farm. I have great respect for them and have learned so much about how vital they are to the health of the planet and survival of humankind. We intentionally planted cone flowers, sedum, peonies, mint, hostas, marigolds, and borage, just to name a few. And boy did they reward us with this beautiful liquid gold. This years harvest (pictured) is a little darker with a delicate flavor and tastes great in hot tea, on oatmeal, and I use it in some recipes, one of which is a healthy stir fry ~ I’ll share it in stories.💛🐝

What a spectacular weather weekend here in Central Va.. I think fall is here to stay!🍂🤞

You’ve heard the phrase “if you try you might, if you don’t you won’t? Y’all, I tried and tried and finally got sweet baby Olive to wear a flower crown! I promised it was all hers to gobble or share with the herd, if she’d just let me snap a couple pics. My little talk must have worked...😉, even if it’s only half her face and a side profile (see that stink eye she’s giving me), a flower crown pic is a flower crown pic. Don’t y’all agree? High five to me! 🙌

What have you been up to this weekend? I hope its more interesting than my resolve to get yet another flower crown photo! Lookout calves, Luna and Willow, you’re next!😆

Are y’all as happy as me that it’s Friday? Phew, what a busy week! Although operating a homestead doesn’t necessarily mean a day off, we here at CRF do try and slow down a bit on the weekends and enjoy our weekly progress.

Do any of you out there like the color purple? I have a few friends that do. I’ve got to admit it’s not my favorite but it is growing on me. The smartweed plant, pictured here, is an herb, (this plant was found around 1910 in Philly) it thrives near wetlands and has taken off around one of our ponds; I think it’s purple flowers are so beautiful in contrast with the green backdrop. When it comes to decorating our home I tend to go for rich, moody hues, paired with neutral grays and blacks (yep black is now considered a neural). Perhaps one day, I’ll show you inside pics of our 1790’s farmhouse. What are some of your favorite colors?

Lastly, a post wouldn’t be complete without my trusty sidekick, Simon. He’s my sweet, goofy boy! 💛

Here is a little history on Conway River Farm. In 1700 a few people were beginning to settle in area of Orange and Greene Counties, these counties were then part of Spotsylvania. In 1732 British King George II gave Edwin Conway and Anthony Thornton a land grant of 5000 acres - for what is now known as Conway River. Edwin Conway's son (also named Edwin) married Anthony Thorntons daughter, which resulted in the merger grant under the Conway name. They had a son named Francis Conway who married Rebecca Catlett Moore; and their children included Francis Jr., Eleanor (Nelly) Rose. Nelly married James Madison, Sr. and became the mother of James Madison, Jr., our 4th President of the US. An unknown portion of the 5000 acres was inherited by Francis Jr., in 1734 The County of Orange was formed, which included what is now Greene County. There are two farms on the 200 acres that we purchased. Conway River Farm and Edgewood Farm (originally named Conway River Farm). The farmhouse on the Edgewood side of the property was built in 1799, and was originally owned by Francis Conway, James Madison's grandfather. The land we purchased has not been farmed in 20+ years. It is our plan to turn this into a self sustainable working farm. We are busy excavating and installing new fencing. We will have a vegetable and flower green houses. Chickens (for eggs), goats - just because they're so darn cute and they'll eat the grass which means a tad less mowing for us. We are also contemplating hops, because microbrews are the latest and hottest commodity. Just because its winter doesn't mean we're not plugging away to get ready for spring plantings, etc... It will certainly be a fun journey. We're so very excited to see how all this plays out and make our vision into a reality! We hope y'all will stay tuned for updates.....
