🌱 So, what the heck is primocane fruiting?
Basically, it means some raspberries and blackberries can give you fruit their very first year. Yep. No waiting around for years for your berries to get their act together. 😂

Here’s how it works:

🫐 Spring: New canes pop up and grow.
🫐 Late summer/fall: Those first-year canes can flower and give you a delicious fall harvest.
🫐 Next year: The same cane can overwinter and produce an early summer crop before it’s finished doing its thing.

Translation: One plant can potentially give you two harvests from the same canes. 🌿🫐

And honestly, anything that works twice as hard for its berries is our kind of plant. 😉
We don’t always give away our secrets, but we always like to keep Mother Nature happy by giving her the credit. Just like that, fall berries!

If you’ve been waiting for another learning opportunity this one’s for you (and also for me, I love research and writing!!) Ready this week: Wolf River Apple 🍎

If you’ve never seen a Wolf River apple before, prepare to be impressed. These apples are BIG—like, one apple could make an entire pie big.🤯

The Wolf River is a historic American apple that originated around 1875 along the Wolf River near Fremont, Wisconsin. It was grown from the seed of an Alexander apple brought over from Quebec.

And there’s a fun little piece of history behind this one: Walt Disney remembered eating Wolf River apples as a child, and reportedly said that just one of these giant apples could make a whole deep-dish pie.

The apples have pale yellow skin with a beautiful red blush and stripes, and the flesh is creamy, tender, and slightly tart. They’re not necessarily the apple you reach for when you want a crisp snack, but put one in a pie, baked dessert, or apple butter, and it really shines.

They typically ripen in mid-September through early October, making them a perfect sign that fall has officially arrived.

And honestly, any apple that can make an entire pie all by itself deserves a little attention. 🍎 👏🏻
