The crew is off on a road trip together as they head back to see family and friends and embark on the next phase of their journeys in life. I feel blessed to have shared the past 7 months with them and grateful that they’ve become such fast friends. Safe travels on your way to Michigan, Texas and the Pacific Northwest!
And whoever paid Nate’s diner bill last night, you are amazing. This community is amazing; that’s the second time these guys have had meals paid for by farm members out in the wild. Instead of a bill last night the waiter passed a note that said, in effect, “thanks for feeding us all season, now’s our chance to give back.”

We had a great group of local growers from the lower Hudson Valley out to the farm yesterday morning for a tour of our wash/pack setup. It was fun and rewarding to share our knowledge with this enthusiastic group of new-ish farmers. First time having a live translator and headsets for a mostly Spanish speaking audience. We’re proud to continue the Sisters of Charity’s tradition of teaching!

My first work free Saturday in over six months left me with a good amount of lathe playtime this weekend! Three fancy little boxes and four bowls came into being. Just like my work in the farm fields, these creations are a synergistic relationship between myself and nature. A hungry sapsucker created the patterns in the walnut and fungus spalted the maple. I just keep my eyes open, ever seeking the wonder and beauty of the natural world, hoping to highlight it for others to see, so they be transfixed by it as well.

I have just one more day with this amazing team. These guys will be sorely missed. As a small token of my appreciation I turned them each a “spootula,” a spatula with a small spoon or scoop for measuring out salt or herbs while cooking. The wood came from a cherry tree that blew down from the microburst tornado this summer. The whole team had been experimenting with spoon carving this season, so I figured I’d give it a shot too. This way they have a little piece of Sisters Hill Farm history to keep with them on life’s journey. Thank you so much Jacob, Nate, Ari, and Alec!

Happy 94th Birthday Peter! Peter was a volunteer at Sisters Hill Farm for more than 2 decades. In that time he helped make our fields more productive and beautiful by removing (by hand) more than a million pounds of rocks and weeding beds that had gotten the better of us. His self imposed title—Field Sanitation Engineer—suited him well.
I had the great pleasure of spending the afternoon with him yesterday and catching up on old times. And I turned him a live edge bowl from a tree on the farm property that had died, but was planted to commemorate our tenth anniversary more than 15 years ago. I’m happy to say he liked it!
Peter, we at Sisters Hill Farm are forever grateful for your dedication and hard work! Rock on!!🎸
