Oh Valentine… are you going to give us a calf this year? 🤞❤️
We’re nearing the end of calving season, and we still have four cows that may - or may not - have calves on the way. Valentine is one of them.
We didn’t do pregnancy checks this year, and Major was running with a fairly large group of cows for a short period of time. There’s a very real possibility that we’re already done calving for the year, but I’m still holding out hope for a few more babies.
Last year, Valentine had a breech calf - a beautiful little dun heifer. Unfortunately, she never developed a suckle reflex. We tried everything we could, including tube feeding her, but during one of my middle of the night checks, she had already passed.
That’s one of the hard realities of farming. We celebrate the successes, but there are losses too.
That calf was Valentine’s first, and ever since then I’ve been looking forward to the day I get to watch her raise one successfully. I have a feeling she’ll make an incredible mom.
So what do you think - does Valentine have a secret baby hiding in there, or is she just keeping us guessing until next year?
