WHAT’S IN YOUR LIVESTOCK FIRST AID KIT? 🩹 🐄🐐🐓

Let’s share some knowledge!

What animals do you raise, and what first aid supplies, medications or equipment do you always keep on hand for them?

Whether it’s something you use all the time or that one item you hope you never need but wouldn’t want to be without.

Let’s build a great list that might help another homesteader be a little more prepared! ❤️🌱

Homegrown coffee beans! ☕️🌱

We added something a little different to the homestead….Arabica coffee plant! ☕️

It’s a perennial evergreen, so with the right care it can grow and produce for years. Eventually, it will produce coffee cherries, which are actually a fruit!

The “coffee beans” are the seeds inside. After removing the beans for coffee, the fruit can be dried and steeped to make cascara tea. 🫖

While waiting for those coffee beans, the leaves can be harvested anytime, dried and steeped to make a naturally caffeinated tea. 🍃☕️

Arabica is also self-pollinating, so one plant can produce fruit on its own. Although it will produce little white flowers for for the pollinators too. 🐝🌸

3 naturally caffeinated products from one perennial plant. Coffee beans, leaves and the fruit.

Coffee, TWO kinds of tea, fruit AND pollinator friendly all from one perennial plant! It’s definitely a good one to add in if you can!

Kid update! 🥰

Our 5 and 6 week old kid gals are doing phenomenal. They are definitely thriving!

We couldn’t have asked for better goat moms too.

Happy, healthy babies and some pretty amazing mamas.

Look who’s getting her little horns in! 🥹🐐❤️

We choose to keep all of our goats’ horns naturally as they are. Horns actually play more of a role than some people realize, including helping with some heat regulation, communication, protection and normal social behavior within the herd.

That being said, there really is no right or wrong choice. Every goat owner has their own reasons behind their care and management decisions, and that’s not for anyone else to judge.

For us personally, any aggressive animal is simply not a welcome member of our farm, horns or no horns.

I’m curious what other goat owners do — do you keep horns natural or choose to disbud, and what’s your main reason why? 🐐❤️
