Papa's Pasture is a pasture based regenerative farm located a half hour outside metro east St. Louis. Our hogs are pasture raised Berkshires.

As many of you know, from our conversations at the farmer’s market, Papa’s Pasture is closing.
This Saturday, the 28th, will be our last day in business.
The freezers are almost empty, but we will have a few things for sale.
Even if you are all stocked up on pork I hope you will stop by to visit.

The mental and emotional lives of the pigs I care for is a constant concern. They are intelligent, charming, stubborn, funny, playful, easily excited rascals. Each of them has a unique personality.
In my mind, there is a responsibility that goes along with being an omnivore; we must choose to be deeply appreciative of the animals who’s bodies nourish ours and we must provide them the best life possible. I am grateful for the opportunity to provide them with the life they deserve.

Last night's 2017 Farmer's Formal was a blast! We ate delicious food prepared by some of the best chefs in St. Louis and grown by amazing local farmers. This event helped EarthDance Organic Farm School continue their mission of expanding our local food food system and teaching the next generation of farmers necessary skills for success. David Kirkland of Turn took our Berkshire pork and made crunchy bánh mì tacos topped with sprouts grown by the fabulous Mary Densmore of Bee Simple. It was the perfect way to unwind after a very busy 2017 growing season.
I am so grateful to the teachers and Dr. Smith for making this an easy and fun experience for myself and the 120 kindergarteners of Leclaire Elementary. I hope the kiddos enjoyed our time together. Their questions and curiosity were a real inspiration.

The whole hog is $2.65/lb. and the half hog is $2.85/lb. plus the cost of butchering.

He just kept sneaking closer until his little nose blocked my lens.
When people think of responsible stewardship practices on a farm the idea of protecting clean air,soil and water for the next generation often comes to mind. Along with these a large area of focus on my farm is antibiotic stewardship.
The common practice of feeding antibiotics to healthy animals for rapid growth is irresponsible and in my opinion reckless.
Feeding antibiotics to animals as a preventive measure for disease rather than providing them living conditions that foster a strong immune system is shortsighted.
Antibiotics save human lives every day.
If we are not careful with how and in what quantity we use these lifesaving tools a bacterial infection that is treatable in our time could be a death sentence for people of the future.

I think it is safe to say Agnus will be the busiest mama this year. She gave birth to 15 piglets last night! She seems very pleased with all of her hard work.
Also, check out that wonderful nest she created for her litter. She hollowed out the space under a very dense multi floral rose thicket; it offers shade, camouflage and shelter. Good job Agnus!

Pearl gave birth to 11 piglets on Saturday.
Gertrude, Agnus, and Winifred will also be giving birth in the next few days.

This was left in the green space next to the market yesterday morning. One of the few contents was my business card. I am hoping they will see this post. Thank you for any help you can give.
The sows have been so busy!! Our forest is overgrown with multi floral rose, Osage orange and honey suckle. After the sows move through we see a blaze of new growth.
