Koester Red Angus

Koester Red Angus Powered by Genetics. Koester Red Angus is a family-run ranch producing age-advantaged bulls that perform on paper and in the pasture.
(1)

Backed by 20+ years of genomic testing. Sale with Leland Red Angus the second Friday of March (March 12, 2027). Koester Red Angus genetics have been used all over the country with the same results – THEY WORK! A fall bull from Koester Red Angus has the age advantage to hold his flesh better than a yearling, while siring just as many calves over his lifetime. We focus our genetics to produce calves

that will generate maximum return whether you sell at weaning, background or hang them on the rail. We also give our customers confidence in structurally correct, maternal and efficient replacement females. Give us a call or stop by for a visit to discuss how our genetics can go to work for your program!

Of all the management tools we use, PREGNANCY ULTRASOUND ranks in our top five.

Sure, we could calve cows without it. But the information we get 90–100 days after our mid-November AI date makes us more efficient.

FIRST, we identify opens early and get them off the feed bill. If we’re considering an open cow as a recip, we can also get a look at her reproductive tract health.

SECOND, we know approximately how many days each cow is bred. That lets us sort calving groups, spend less time checking cows that aren’t close and move groups to fresh pasture as each cycle wraps up.

THIRD, we learn calf s*x and identify most of the cows carrying twins.

TODAY, that information PAID OFF.

We keep the known “twinners” close for extra monitoring, and this afternoon we also received a 701x calving alert on heifer 4126. We don’t love seeing twins in a heifer, so we moved her to the barn where Steve assisted the delivery.

The result – two live bull calves.

We’ll only let her raise one, fostering the other on another cow if needed. But today was a good reminder that information collected months ago can make a big difference when it matters most.

And the WINNER is …

Thanks to everyone for guessing how many cow were left to calve.

It’s been a whirlwind two weeks with over 100 calves born, weighed and tagged! 🥵

My 701x Autonomous Rancher app said 3 cows calved over night. It was correct but the date stamps were after midnight so they didn’t count.

🏆 Congratulations,Patty Tebeliuss, for guessing 23 cows left to calf after their due date!

Please let us know if you want a cap, leather gloves or a Cow Camp pocket knife and we’ll either meet you in town (supper at the Amvets?) or we can mail it.

Good luck at the Big Horn Classic this week selling your steers!

📅 Today, Aug. 14, is the due date on our first-cycle, synchronized cows & heifers - 122 head.
📋 They are figured on 279-days gestation.
🐂 They started calving Aug. 1.

How many will be left to calve at the end of today?

Need more info? Ask any questions in the comments👇 - except how many have already calved.

A prize will be awarded to anyone who nails it!

Finding new calves can be a challenge.

These good cows are just doing their job but between the tall slough grass, wild plum thickets and feral ground willows, it’s easy to miss the cow let alone the calf.

Today we tagged and weighed 15 calves and put the 701x calving alerts to the test!

We woke up to 8 alerts and with the help of the GPS tracking, Bluetooth Amber Alerts and a touch of cow sense, we found all of the new calves and kept up tagging.

In fact, Steve Koester even said in two instances, “We never would have known she’d calved nor would have we found her without the xTpro tags.”

This tech is definitely saving us time and helping us stay caught up with new calves.

At dark, we had alerts that two more cows were calving so tomorrow promises to be another busy day.

Calving-season level up.

The 701x alerts are firing and the Fast Catch cage is making tagging easy. Let’s see how many we can find.

You can't buy what makes a cowboy.

It isn't defined by a hat or a stereotype.
It's defined by your character.

No shortcuts. No excuses.
Fortitude to do the job, do it well and earn your spurs.

It's the way you steward the land, cattle and genetics – and give your all.

It's how you handle the cowboy sh*t nobody posts about.
- Long days.
- Short nights.
- Broke-down equipment.
- Tough decisions.
- Weather you can't control.
- The losses nobody sees.

That's what makes a cowboy.

Here's to the men and women who live it every day.
