Last week, we traveled to Reno, NV, for the American Sheep Industry Association Annual Convention. Kade spoke on the 'Tradition Meets Tomorrow: Strategies for Sustainable Growth' panel alongside Hurley Polypay Sheep Farm and Grant Azevedo of Mission Lamb. We enjoyed seeing old friends and making new ones. Exciting things are coming for the sheep industry!

We are honored to be the recipients of the 2025 Texas Sheep & Goat Raisers Assn. Young Rancher Award! We are thankful for TSGRA, and all the friends and family who have helped us along the way!

The TSGRA Young Ranchers of the Year: Kade & Morgan Hodges - the dynamic duo behind Hodges Livestock.

They operate in Sterling, Coke, Tom Green, Navarro, and Grimes counties. They raise Royal White sheep, commercial cattle & commercial goats. In addition, they own a feedlot where they formulate their own rations, mix their own feed, & finish a portion of their lambs. They also provide vegetation management services to solar farms through targeted sheep grazing in hybrid grazing-mowing systems.

The couple has one son, Weston, who they look forward to raising in the agriculture industry! Congrats to this family!

What does a farmer need to know about launching a solar sheep enterprise?

For this ASGA virtual workshop, we’re discussing how to approach starting a solar grazing business, including general sheep enterprise planning and what unique costs and factors new graziers need to take into account when building their business plan.

Jake Thorne, Assistant Professor and Extension Sheep & Goat Specialist at Texas A&M, will kick us off by presenting on basic sheep enterprise planning. Then he’ll lead a moderated discussion with three solar graziers who will share their experience and case studies on how they approached developing their solar grazing businesses.

Panelists:
-Lewis Fox, Agrivoltaic Solutions - Based in Vermont, Lewis is a founding ASGA member and previous Board member with extensive experience grazing community and DG solar sites in the Northeast.

-Brock Phillips, Carolina Solar Services - Based in North Carolina, Brock is another long-time solar grazier with experience in the Southeast region managing vegetation on community scale sites.

-Morgan and Kade Hodges, Hodges Livestock - Based in Sterling City, TX, Morgan and Kade have long family histories of raising livestock in Texas. They are ASGA Certified Solar Graziers who began grazing sheep on utility scale solar in Texas this past year.
