🦋 DID YOU KNOW? Monarch butterflies are toxic to many predators!

If you’ve spotted monarch caterpillars munching away on milkweed, there’s something pretty amazing happening.

🌿 Milkweed contains natural toxins called cardenolides, also known as cardiac glycosides. Monarch caterpillars are able to eat the plant and store some of these toxins in their bodies — and they remain there even after the caterpillar transforms into a butterfly.

🐛➡️🦋 This gives monarchs a built-in defense. If certain predators, especially birds, eat a monarch, the toxins can make them sick or even cause them to vomit. That unpleasant experience may teach the predator to avoid monarchs in the future.

And those beautiful orange-and-black colors? They act as a warning signal that basically says, “I may not be a good choice for lunch!” 🧡🖤

Nature is pretty incredible! 🌿🦋
