I have 2 hens that hatched out a total of 8 chicks. Last night I only counted 5. They go in and out of the fencing and...

I have 2 hens that hatched out a total of 8 chicks. Last night I only counted 5. They go in and out of the fencing and I think the neighborhood cats are snacking on them. So I swooped in like DHS and took custody of the remaining 5. They are in my brooder now. I feel bad, but I hate to lose them all before they're even old enough to squawk. I will have to find a solution to this issue before the next season of hatching.

At least I now know that my hens are making pretty good mamas! Last year they were NOT....so it was a surprise to see them being so good at it this year. I only had one black chick, the rest are red or white....I was bummed that blackie was gone when I got home yesterday. I was pretty pi**ed when I took custody...but not at mama hen. More at the cats...even though I have no proof other than they are lingering too long and staring intensely at my coop....In my mind, they are the culprits. BAD KITTY!
