With Easter around the corner, I wanted to share a few facts about Farm Fresh Eggs & Chickens- I do not approve of factory eggs, over crowding and exploitation of hens to mass produce in unhealthy living conditions - this is just me, talking about my beautiful, healthy, fluffy butt, well cared for, organic fed hens at the Floofy Butt Hut….
Eggs are laid with a protective layer called the “bloom” that seals the pores on the egg to keep bacteria from entering.
**Farm fresh eggs should come out fairly clean. A filthy dirty egg can mean the chicken isn’t as healthy, might need de-wormed, possible medical attention, a dirty coop or sometimes it just happens that the egg has a little “poop” on it- this is when a quick wipe off or washing is a good idea. Healthy happy clean chickens *usually produce healthy happy clean eggs.
Unwashed eggs can stay on the counter for several weeks.
Washed eggs must be refrigerated and last up to two months.
Store your eggs upside down to help keep them fresh (pointy side down).
Chickens are omnivores. They love bugs, frogs, snakes, mice and other small creatures along with all kinds of vegetation.
Chickens shouldn’t have potato skins, tomato stems or leaves.
Farm eggs have 1/3 less cholesterol, 1/4 less saturated fat, 2/3 more vitamin A, two times more omega-3 fatty acids and three times more vitamin E than store bought eggs.
You can tell if the egg is fertilized by there being a white “bullseye” on the yolk.
* The egg is still perfectly fine and safe to eat if you see or don’t see this white dot. *
*We are not use to seeing red spots in our eggs due to factory farms wasting billions of eggs each year picking only the best looking eggs for consumers. Red spots are perfectly normal and part of egg production. When/if you find a piece of “red” and natural shedding occured, you can simply pick it out. This egg is still 100% safe to eat. It does NOT mean it was a chicken. It is shedding of the inside lining. Not a baby!
One egg can have as many as 17,000 pores on the shell - another reason a clean unwashed egg is better.
The breed of the chicken will determine the color of the egg.
The yolks contain vitamin D.
Chickens run faster than humans. If you’ve ever had to catch one, you’d know this is a fact… and EXHAUSTING!
Chickens can remember up to 100 faces and have personalities.
Chicken math is real. Our coop started out with 5… we now have 13 chickens. Plus 6 in the brooder… and a dozen eggs in the incubator. 😁🙃
