Weeds is the word of the next few weeks. Every day, I clear another couple of beds ahead of the planting schedule.
It makes for a busy spring, but I found that I w**ded again the following spring if I tried to do all the w**ding in the fall.
Leaving plant matter, even w**ds, keep the good soil microbe colonies intact to do their business over the winter. Fall w**ding disturbs and disrupts those systems.
My favorite w**d finds were the two dandelions with tap roots that ran from wrist to armpit. Truly impressive, and thanks to those dandelions, for the work they did in my garden.
The chickens said they were delicious.

One of my goals for this year is to finish up my trellises for the raspberry patch.
I have been tweaking this set up for years, testing varieties and methods for w**d control.
Finally I began working to address the biggest problem, cane management.
Raspberry plants are floppy. Mowing between the beds is hard. The mower would knock ripe berries off the canes. To prevent this, I needed an extra pair of hands to lift the canes with a length of PVC pipe so I could get through the rows.
I did a fair bit of research and found this set up.
It seems like a lot of trouble, but raspberries are, in my opinion, worth it.
I hope to offer them more regularly this season for CSA.

This weekend I started the prettiest crop and the largest crop I grow: Swiss chard and broccolini.
The basement window well was nearly full to the brim with snow, but the basement is full of hope for a good growing season.

CSA pictures are pretty boring this time of year, but, in my mind, everything is green and lush.
Every year I try to move the planning needle closer to the ideal. Every year, it’s a challenge. But every year, I am getting my system a little closer to ideal.
Two thoughts from last season:
I miss buttercup squash.
I miss onions.
Delicata squash don’t keep long enough to merit much bed space, so this season I am replacing three delicata beds with three different varieties of buttercup squash, hoping to find one that does well here.
I am also interplanting onions with all the squash beds. Onions are natural squash bug deterrents and it’s the squash bugs that knock back our squash crop year after year.
This picture may not be exciting, but I think our squash plan for this season is!
Shout out to , their butternut variety is fabulous for short growing seasons!

Cold mornings are my time for hot coffee and garden planning.
The 2026 CSA Season is shaping up nicely.
I’ll be contacting previous members and opening to new members (depending on share availability) soon.
Stay tuned!

Saved from the frost!
Everything I covered showed some damage. I cut away all the affected basil and gave the peppers a pep talk.
The squash plants are a loss, but I harvested LOTS before temperatures tanked.
A bonus CSA pick up is looking like a real possibility.

Jeez, it was 91 degrees Saturday. Tonight it’s supposed to drop below freezing.
I have been picking steadily for the last two days. So many squash to rescue.
Stay tuned to see what survives and what falls to frost.
