In the foreground, a young first-time mama nurses her calf. In the background, an older cow stands over her final calf, one that didnā€™t make it.

I knew last year should have been her last, but I pushed that boundary and kept her. As stewards of both the land and these animals, that isnā€™t always the humane choice. She should have entered the food chain before this pregnancy, but I ignored that quiet nudge, and thereā€™s a hard lesson in that.

This pregnancy was hard on her. The birth was harder. We had to manually pull the calf, and despite everything, it wasnā€™t enough.

Loving these animals deeply can sometimes blur the line between compassion and responsibility. As much as my heart wants to give each one a full lifetime here, that isnā€™t always whatā€™s best for them.

Today, Iā€™m holding both gratitude and humility, thankful for the new life in this photo, and thankful for the old cow and what sheā€™s taught me. Hard lessons, but important ones.

Although she wasnā€™t the first one born, this little 55 lb bundle of soft cuteness is my very first successful artificial insemination. Her mama is the first animal I ever AIā€™d, and it just so happened to stick! Iā€™ve been anxiously awaiting her arrivalā€”forever my #1.

Exciting time here on the farm! This is the first calf born here that Tarra helped create by artificially inseminating our donor in preparation for an on-farm fresh embryo transfer. Itā€™s a meaningful milestone for our operation and a moment weā€™re really proud of.
