Howell Farm is a local gem! The plow match is a wonderful family friendly event for history buffs and those who love watching big horses work up close. Wear comfortable clothing and bring a lawn chair. The farm will provide transportation to the field for those in need. Great home cooked food for lunch, live music, big horses. What a great way to spend the day!

Our "Rainbow Eggs" come with the challenge of managing the broody hens associated with certain breeds. Once hens get broody they stop laying themselves and sit on the eggs of other hens, crowding the non broody hens out of the laying box. They break the eggs in the laying box by trying to roll the eggs under their body so they can sit on them and hatch them. Also, the "broodyness" is "contagious". This means other hens can become broody just by watching other broody hens. If we don't seperate our broody hens from the rest of the flock, laying is greatly reduced and many eggs get cracked or broken. The struggle is real! But the beautiful egg colors make me want to work through these challenges. That said, this particular hen was VERY insistent she wanted chicks. So 5 eggs were placed under her and 2 hatched successfully. Hopefully both babies are hens!

This season's potato patch is doing well. We hope to get between 300 and 500 pounds of a mix of all blue, all red and all white potatoes. Organic seed is used, a stirrup hoe keeps weeds at bay, and Ladybugs keep the insects under control. Flash tape keeps the deer away. We use no sprays except very rarely a blood meal and/or a hot pepper spray if deer, rabbits or ground hogs start dining. The patch is near a red tail hawk nest and a fox trail so we have a little extra protection against rabbits and groundhogs.

Elliot BC I cannot respond to you via message, not sure why. We no longer have a traditional farm stand. We sell our eggs to Basil Bandwagon and occasionally plant starts or potatoes we grow annually those who inquire.
