Harvest Tip: Timing Matters!
With Harvest Season here, we want to share a few tips to help you gather the best-quality nuts and know what our hulling stations will be looking for this fall.
Black Walnuts will continue to drop throughout the harvest season, but when you gather them can make a big difference in the flavor and quality of the nut meat inside.
For the best results, pick up Black Walnuts within a few days of falling, while the outer hull is still mostly green. Once the hull has turned completely black and the nut has been sitting on the ground for too long, the quality and flavor of the nutmeat declines quickly.
Quality starts in the field. When you bring in fresh, mostly green-hulled Black Walnuts, you are doing your part to preserve the bold, rich flavor that makes American Black Walnuts so special. It is a tradition worth doing right — and it all starts with picking them up fresh.
