Today was bull turn-out day! After a quick trip to our vet to make sure the bulls are fertile and ready to breed, we dropped off three handsome boys with the cow herd. They will get to work, and in nine months, we’ll be starting calving season again 😁 The cycle of life doesn’t ever seem to stop here at the farm!

One big difference in our grass-fed beef versus most of what you would find in supermarkets or elsewhere is that we are a conception-to-finish beef operation. This means we breed our own cows, calve them, and raise them to finish all on our farm. The only time they leave our pastures is at the very end when they head to the processor. In fact, two of the three bulls we turned out today were born right here on our farm. We take pride in being able to responsibly manage every stage and facet of your local beef!

Explainer: How four big companies control the U.S. beef industry

Interested in knowing more about what is happening with-in the beef industry and why things are the way they are? Here is a quick read that explains it all very well.

https://www.reuters.com/business/how-four-big-companies-control-us-beef-industry-2021-06-17/

U.S. lawmakers are seeking increased oversight of the beef sector as concerns about anticompetitive behavior increase after the pandemic and a cyberattack on a major meat company, JBS USA.

This butterfly on a thistle is kind of indicative of the theme of this post - there is beauty among the prickles 😌 This is going to be a longer post, so buckle up!

We knew it was inevitable. So, when our family owned and operated meat processor messaged us last week and told us their new pricing schedule goes into effect today, we weren’t too surprised. We’d been anticipating it all spring; every chat with them seemed to somehow lead to a conversation about keeping good employees and finding people who were skilled at butchery. They knew that, in order to keep their good employees long term, they would have to pay them more. Which is why the 20% jump in processing costs didn’t catch us off guard. In fact, there may even be a butterfly on this thistle (maybe a new way to say “a silver lining“) 😉

Because of the way the meat industry and regulations are set up currently, every piece of meat that we sell retail has to pass through either a state or federally inspected meat processing facility. So, in a nutshell, their survival means our survival as a business. We couldn’t supply you with the meat that we do if it wasn’t for our processor. We’ve built a great relationship with them over many years and want to ensure their success, because that also means our success and your continued access to local, 100% grassfed meats. They have our back in every way... ensuring that the final product that reaches you is top-notch quality and processed in an ethical and clean way.

So what does that mean for us and for you? We’ll have to raise some prices for sure, but we intend to continue to offer as many bulk purchasing options as we can (we may even have some new bundles in the works). For our bulk beef customers, look for an email from us in the next week or so. 📧

Another thing that we haven’t talked much about is the #primeact, a bill just reintroduced in Congress that would address the shortage of small-scale meat processing that we are seeing nationwide. While maybe not the perfect solution to what we’re experiencing, it is a step in the right direction. We’ll have to do another post in the future talking about that more.

Thanks for your support! 🤎

A time-lapsed glimpse into the daily life of a regenerative farmer 🎥🌾

This is Jonathan, just the other morning, moving our stocker herd. We have a few different groups of cattle right now, and this is the herd that has all the non-calving cattle (steers, yearlings, and young heifers).

This is pretty much what the daily routine looks like right now: set up fence, call the cows, move the water and mineral feeder, repeat. Every day. Sometimes multiple times a day.

Grass-fed and finished cattle need a fresh “buffet” of grass that is regularly replenished. Knowing when to move them and how much grass to give is both a science and and an art. It takes a keen eye and a good amount of experience. The reward? Happy cows, healthier soils, and outstanding beef 🌟

Castilleja, commonly known as Prairie Fire or Indian Paintbrush. This is one of the beautiful, Oklahoma native flowers that adorn our pastures. We love seeing it’s uniquely bright blooms speckle the fields in early summer! ☀️

One of the unique things about the way we farm is the diversity of plant species that we welcome, and even encourage, in our pastures. Take a walk just a couple feet through most of our fields and you will easily encounter 25-30 (conservative estimate) different species of grasses, legumes, and forbs. Diversity of species builds resilience into a regenerative landscape and provides food and habitat for thousands of our little friends both above and below the ground 🤎 If you do come out for a walk, just don’t ask us to name all the species as we are still learning some of them ourselves 😉🤣 Bring a plant book and we’ll learn together!

Have a great weekend and stay cool!

That’s a wrap! Lambing season is basically over here at Bent Tree Farms ✔️ There may be a few more babies born in the next week or so, but we’ve joined the sheep back up with the cow herd (they lamb separately to avoid any issues with their larger bovine counterparts 😆)

We added about 225 new little lambs to our flock this spring 🥰 Now we get to watch them grow (oh so fast) and enjoy their amusing antics over the summer. We will market the best to other folks who are looking to start, or add to, their own flock of hair sheep. Our sheep are easy-keepers, fertile, and add another stream of income to an existing cattle operation. We also consistently receive rave reviews on our purely grass-fed and finished lamb. Send us a DM with any questions on how to order or get started!

Happy June from one of our snoozin’ little newborn calves 😌 We hope y’all have some nice R & R coming up this weekend!

Due to some current events, we’ve seen a spike in bulk beef ordering. While we are nearly booked for halves and quarters for the rest of this year, we are going to offer a couple 1/8th beef bundles this month! These eighths are pretty much just that, a variety of cuts that total an 1/8 of a beef. Message or call for more information. We also have other bulk bundles available as well.

Happy Wednesday from our group of finishing steers! Blue skies + green grass = the good life! They are busy munching on their luscious greens and gaining weight. 🌱☘️

To us, producing premium beef requires a few simple ingredients: High quality forage, low-stress environment, and time. We don’t take shortcuts and we never feed grain. Finishing solely on grass is both an art and a science, and there is something new to be learned every season. It’s a fun and rewarding challenge though to get an animal to fatten on just solar energy ☀️ In our minds, there’s nothing better or more sustainable.

Lambing season is in full swing here at Bent Tree Farms! As of this morning, we have had 128 lambs born this year, with about 8-10 more being born every day. Pasture lambing in May is such a breeze... it’s warm, there’s plenty of grass, the ewes lamb in top-notch condition and make plenty of nourishing milk. All we do is walk through the flock and tag the newborns (And, as you can see, Cal always wants to hold one 🤎).

Anyone want to start a flock of hair sheep? We’ll have young ewes and rams available for anyone looking for high-quality, easy-care sheep. Message or call us for more info!

We’ve been a little quiet on here and it’s because calving season is officially upon us! Here’s a few cute pics from the past couple of days 🥰

We do the majority of our calving in the springtime and try to time it so that our cattle and sheep are birthing when the native ruminants are also birthing. This is when the fresh grass is abundant and matching the nutritional needs of the mama cows. Warm weather and green grass decrease stress for both the livestock and the rancher 😉 Happy cows + happy rancher = the best beef! 🤎

It’s great to see how the Bent Tree Farm uses sustainable agricultural methods to avoid toxic chemicals. Local regenerative farms provide their communities with more than just incredible produce and animal products. I recently learned that regenerative farmers can provide the solution to climate change from “Kiss the Ground,” a documentary on Netflix. This movie explains that when farmers use regenerative agricultural methods, they create healthy soil. This soil has the miraculous ability to sequester significant amounts of carbon from our atmosphere. The film features a multitude of celebrity activists that support this message, such as Ian Somerhalder, Tom Brady, and Allan Savory. Now that the film is on the massive platform of Netflix, I believe it will positively impact combating climate change. Check out the “Kiss the Ground” page on Netflix below.
A reliable source of grass-fed, grass-finished beef, lamb and chicken, especially if you care about how the animals are raised and the land is maintained, and about buying local. The meat is the best we've ever had. For anyone who thought that even grass-fed beef should be grain finished to be tender -- not so. Price: several varieties of cuts -- by the item, it isn't Walmart per-pound pricing, but favorable compared with Whole Foods, Natural Grocers, etc., and better quality overall. Buy 1/8 or greater part of whole beef or on sale, when the prices are best. You can visit to see where and how your food is raised. The butchering, even, is high quality. They have been our meat source for about a year now, and no disappointments. Jonathan and family are personable and give individual attention, when needed, to your order. So good, and local, too!
I am a new customer for Bent Tree Farms and I will definitely be a lifetime customer! The quality of meat I purchased on Saturday is amazing. The young man helped me pick out what exactly I wanted & recommended the lamb (surprise for my husband) and it was amazing. Great customer service! Thank you & I will be placing another bigger order next round!
