Signs of a busy weekend sawing in the rain! We often get asked what we do with the “waste” from the mill. As with just about everything else on the farm any byproducts of sawing do not go to waste. The sawdust is collected and blended into our compost pile, which is then spread on our fields in the off seasons, it is unfortunately too fine to use for animal bedding. The slab wood is sorted between hard and soft wood. The hardwood slabs are cut for firewood, whether it be our firewood bundles or to heat the house in the colder months. The soft wood is also cut up for firewood, but it powers the evaporators used to make maple syrup. Any extra, which is quite a bit, we offer up at no cost to other local farms to power their sap operations! We believe very much in neighbors helping neighbors.
