Took a few hours off away from the farm this morning and followed Alison to work. I was invited to E.O. Smith to set up a display alongside the food tasting Alison and her staff prepared using local produce. I had the opportunity to talk to the kids in line about the importance of agriculture and how our farm operates. We discussed things like what we grow, how our sawmill works and even how big our tractors are. It was a great experience all around and I was glad to connect with the next generation on how important local agriculture is. Next week I will be bringing my display to the Middle School and the following week I will be at the Elementary School. It was a neat experience for me getting to interact with the kids while also getting to see Alison in action leading her team. I’m very grateful to the town’s Farm to School program for giving me this opportunity and allowing me to share some of my knowledge with the students.

Less than ideal ground conditions this afternoon but with more rain moving in at the end of the week the potato field needed to be turned over in preparation for next year. Old Blue did its thing and got the job done! Now we just have to crunch some numbers and decide if it’s worth doubling the size of the field and devoting more acreage to them next year.

It doesn’t look like much now but next year these rows will be filled with Hydrangeas, Peonies and other varieties of perennial flowers. Tonight I roughed in 13 55’ rows. The cover crop will break down and benefit the soil’s health and the rows will be top-dressed with compost from our own pile. We’ve got many more expansion projects happening this off-season, and it wouldn’t be possible without the support of our great customers.

It’s that time of year again where the leaves are falling! If you are local and looking for a place to dump the leaves from your lawn or even if you have animals yourself and no place to dispose of the manure piles we will gladly take them at the farm! Easy in and out for dumping, all we ask is no chemically treated grass clippings and/or brush. We compost it all down and it in turn gets spread back on our fields to improve the soil quality. Landscapers are welcome! We will take loads of any size, 7 days a week. Just reach out first before coming. Thank you!

And that’s a wrap on the 2026 Potato harvest! We beat the incoming rainstorm. The work doesn’t stop here though. The potatoes will be laid out to dry, cleaned, sorted and packaged for either the farmstand or our bulk customers. The field itself will be plowed, fertilized and put to rest until we open it back up next spring! Keep an eye out on the coming weeks for all 8 varieties to become available. We have all different shapes, sizes and flavors!

The first frost of the season is upon us and it is bittersweet. Our growing season has officially come to an end but the work doesn’t stop. We are well underway into digging potato’s, prepping our fields for next season and even opening up some new ones as we expand. We are thankful for another great season with our customers, we truly could not do this without you. Alison and I beyond grateful for every one of you. The farm stand will stay stocked as supplies last with various winter squash, potatoes, pumpkins and honey. The hens are still in high gear and eggs will continue to be available year round. Found some time this week to start digging into our “project tractor” on the farm. We bought this 1953 Farmall Super M last winter as a tillage tractor. We tore the loader off earlier this summer and in my spare time this week I rewired it from front to back, converting it to a keyed ignition, adding a new amp gauge, making all new cables, and making a wiring harness from scratch. The coil got a proper mount and work lights were added up front and the original lights on the tractor will be converted to led for more efficiency as the days get shorter. It’s not an overly complicated task but having a color coded wiring diagram will make life easier if problems arise, and anybody who knows me knows I can’t stand messy wiring. Everything is tucked into loom and run in the factory clips. On to the next project!

Mabel and Maizey have been hard at work planning for next year. We are adding more fields devoted to the flower side of the farm. We are looking for suggestions on what our customers would like to see us offering. We are especially looking for suggestions on Perennials as the twins will be breaking ground for Fall planting in the coming weeks. We will be earmarking over an acre so we have plenty of room for new varieties. Thanks for the help!
