Let's make 2022 a food-fear-free year, mmkay?
Part of that is understanding labels, which can be confusing - I totally get that. Let's dive in👇🏻
GMO-free on foods that don't have a GMO counterpart, like tomatoes, cause confusion and some wariness. Don't fear things like tomato sauce or orange juice labeled "GMO-free" because there aren't any GMO oranges or tomatoes. The only GMO products are: corn, soybeans, sugar beets, canola, squash, papayas, potatoes, cotton, alfalfa, salmon and apples. And, to repeat myself, GMOs are S A F E and have been proven so millions of times (literally).
Antibiotic-free is another misleading one because there aren't antibiotics in your meat or milk. The FDA and USDA have multiple checkpoints and disciplines in place to prevent residues from making it to the marketplace. When animals get sick (and they do, because they are animals) - the responsible and humane thing to do is treat them with a veterinarian-approved medicine. After doing so, the animal cannot be taken to market until the medicine has worked out of its system (anywhere from 21-90 days, depending on the antibiotic). Your meat, milk and other animal products are safe.
The next one that burns my bacon and is also irrelevant is "hormone-free." Did y'all know that all food, except salt and other minerals, has hormones in it? Cabbage, carrot, taters, milk, eggs, pork - you name it, it has hormones in it. The key is the "added-hormone" piece of it and that is illegal in pork and poultry. Yes, you heard me. Illegal - so if you see a package of pork chops or chicken breasts labeled "hormone free" please know that all pork and poultry is added-hormone free. Don't pay more for wet water.
In beef production, growth hormone implants are legal but there is more estrogen in a salad than in a 3 oz serving of steak, honestly. The growth implant is the size of your favorite TicTac, inserted under the skin on the back of the ear and is dissolved long before the animal is taken to the butcher. Growth implants help us produce more nutritious beef with fewer inputs like grass and water, which helps us be more sustainable.
Farm-raised. Where the aych-e-double hockey sticks else would food at the grocery store be raised? A car factory in Detroit? A high-rise in New York? Food comes from farms and ranches. Don't pay more for products that try to take advantage of grocery shoppers. If you want to buy them, go ahead - the producers that provide them appreciate your support - but don't do so out of fear.
I want 2022 to be a food-fear-free for y'all. Is it ok to ask questions? Absofreakinlutely. If you have questions about your food, please ask me. Please, I am begging you. If I don't know the answer, I will find someone who does and send you their way or make that connection. Please ask those of us who raise the food, I promise you we have a very good handle on the processes behind food production. Pinky swear.

Food for thought..
The red liquid on the plate when eating a rare steak is not blood. It is a protein called myoglobin, which distributes oxygen to the muscles.
All blood has been removed from the carcass during the slaughtering process. There is no such thing as a bloody steak.
