This is one of our guardians of the dahlias, on duty! With their help we were able to run our annual dahlia CSA which ended last week. Wow, that went by fast! Thank you to all of our members who signed up and to our generous pick up location hosts: Mel The Bakery Bartlett House Stewart House Marton & Davis

Our farm in Stuyvesant and our tent at the Kinderhook Farmers Market were also pick up spots and we loved getting to meet our new members and catch up with old friends. What a great job this is!

As long as the weather is pleasant and without frost we’ll have flowers for another couple of weeks! See you this weekend!

This is one of our guardians of the dahlias, on duty! With their help we were able to run our annual dahlia CSA which ended last week. Wow, that went by fast! I need to pause these portrait posts for a minute to give a shout out to Denise and Evan from Damsel Garden • Flower Farm in Stuyvesant! Their Dahlia CSA in September and Uncommon/Heirloom Tulip CSA in April bring so, so much joy to everyone who sees them. The color combinations and varieties are so striking (and I have experience working at a flower shop so I don't say this lightly!) You can also often find them at the kinderhookfarmersmarket or reach out to them directly for event florals. Thank you so much for allowing me to visit and photograph your gorgeous space 💐

It’s so worth the wait! This week we start our annual four week dahlia CSA share! While we have had some dahlias since late June, they really come into their own with the cooler nights we’ve been having. In June-July they are slow and go a bit dormant. In August the stem count increases but not enough. As soon as evening temperatures start to drop to the 60s and now 50s, suddenly we go from hundreds to thousands of blooms. And with the cooler weather your dahlias also start to grow new tubers. Let’s see how long we can go! Last year the frost hit mid October, but I don’t want to think about that right now. It’s dahlia season here in Zone 5B, and we are celebrating! Thank you to all our members and host pick up locations for joining us for the next four weeks!

This handsome fellow is Forest. He recently allowed us to dress him up with some of our flowers and didn’t seem to mind too much. (He was a good sport!) We ❤️ Forest! He’s part of the Shanna Pickwick herd, and we are very fortunate to have them as our friends and neighbors. If you’re going to the Columbia County Fair this week, be sure to look for their miniature Herefords in the animal barns. They will have some of their cows on display, plus their mini cow compost which is excellent for flowers and vegetables!

Why do we wait to start our dahlia CSA share / subscription until September when we’ve had flowers since June?

One big reason is the first dahlia blooms are impacted greatly by heat and insects. I joked with Julia Appleby that we give the first flowers to the bugs, and I suppose that’s true. We’ve observed the cycles of the Japanese beetles and thrips (among others) that damage the first buds. These pests come out during the heat of early summer when dahlias are not yet hitting their stride and are stressed from the heat. The insects nibble the buds resulting in lopsided, incomplete flowers. Do we give up? No, we wait. Why would you use any poison and pesticides, organic included? That doesn’t make sense. I generalize here, but humans’ first reaction is to squash, kill, annihilate, obliterate. Instead, I choose to cooperate. There is room for all of us.

And so, the first dahlias provide some food for pests until their life cycle is complete - the insects get food, we wait a bit and get the stellar blooms. A win-win.

So, here we are, less than a month away from the start of our dahlia CSA share. The dahlia field, nearly 4000 planted this season, will be crazy abundant with flowers for you come early September!

The first dahlias are popping! These beauties will be finding their way into bouquets we’ll be making tomorrow Get there early because it’s looking like it’ll be a hot, hot day.

Speaking of dahlias, our dahlia CSA share is available now on our site. Sign up for four weeks of gorgeous, rare dahlias, starting the second week of September. Like our popular spring tulip CSA, this runs for four consecutive weeks and offers various pick up locations in Hudson, Kinderhook, Ghent, Chatham and our farm in Stuyvesant.

And because several people have asked, we’ve also added to the web shop a five week summer flower share. This share is flexible (not consecutive weeks). That means you just let us know the week you want flowers and you shall receive! See site for more info.
