Why do we wait to start our dahlia CSA share / subscription until September when we’ve had flowers since June?

One big reason is the first dahlia blooms are impacted greatly by heat and insects. I joked with Julia Appleby that we give the first flowers to the bugs, and I suppose that’s true. We’ve observed the cycles of the Japanese beetles and thrips (among others) that damage the first buds. These pests come out during the heat of early summer when dahlias are not yet hitting their stride and are stressed from the heat. The insects nibble the buds resulting in lopsided, incomplete flowers. Do we give up? No, we wait. Why would you use any poison and pesticides, organic included? That doesn’t make sense. I generalize here, but humans’ first reaction is to squash, kill, annihilate, obliterate. Instead, I choose to cooperate. There is room for all of us.

And so, the first dahlias provide some food for pests until their life cycle is complete - the insects get food, we wait a bit and get the stellar blooms. A win-win.

So, here we are, less than a month away from the start of our dahlia CSA share. The dahlia field, nearly 4000 planted this season, will be crazy abundant with flowers for you come early September!

The first dahlias are popping! These beauties will be finding their way into bouquets we’ll be making tomorrow Get there early because it’s looking like it’ll be a hot, hot day.

Speaking of dahlias, our dahlia CSA share is available now on our site. Sign up for four weeks of gorgeous, rare dahlias, starting the second week of September. Like our popular spring tulip CSA, this runs for four consecutive weeks and offers various pick up locations in Hudson, Kinderhook, Ghent, Chatham and our farm in Stuyvesant.

And because several people have asked, we’ve also added to the web shop a five week summer flower share. This share is flexible (not consecutive weeks). That means you just let us know the week you want flowers and you shall receive! See site for more info.

That’s enough from me for now. Back to the fields!

Come see us tomorrow from 8:30-12:30 pm. We’ll have the last of our tulips, plus ranunculus, anemone, the first peony and sweet peas! It’s also village-wide yard sale day! Maybe you’ll find some treasures. If you happen to find a vase, bring it to our market table and get some flowers to fill it!  The vase in this photo recently got a new life. It was in my family home for at least 60 years not doing much, and it was so fantastic to dust it off and fill it with these spring beauties. Hope to see you!

What a great spring it’s been! Today we’re making our last tulip CSA deliveries for the season and harvesting loads and loads of beautiful spring flowers for Saturday’s

Also in the mix today are some enhancements to our big floral cooler, mowing and many, many trips to the compost pile (why did we make it so far away???). And if we’re lucky we may even get some more dahlias in the ground. Just a few thousand to go! 🤪

The work is hard, but completely gratifying, and made so much better with our great team and (who was out today so I’m recycling a pic of her from a few years ago).
