Farming is really hard work (in case you didn’t know), but it’s rewarding in so many ways. One of the best things about doing this job is the people who are doing it with us. The crew this year has been incredible, and I honestly can’t say enough kind words about them. From their collective overwhelming positivity, to their silliness and giggles, and their unmatched productivity— these people make the job so fun.

So many good times with this fantastic group of people!

Happy Monday!

👋Meet Chris of Siena Farms!

🥬In 2005, after the birth of their daughter Siena,
Chris and his wife started Siena Farms on the land he grew up on. Now they are a seventy-five acre market farm growing fresh produce for farmers’ markets, restaurants, and a 750-member CSA community. Siena Farms cultivates the fertile soils of the Sudbury River valley just twenty-five miles west of Boston. In 2011, they opened Siena Farms South End, the first year-round micro urban farm store in the heart of Boston’s South End neighborhood – the inspiration for the farm store in the Boston Public Market.

Stop by Siena Farms this week to check out all their fresh, seasonal produce!
So y’all should definitely start providing tomato based recipes (or eggplant recipes for the last few boxes)… I don’t know what to do with all of these.
Beautiful days ahead for time in the city! While you’re in Boston, don’t forget to come by the Boston Public Market for a scoop at our stall!

We’re scooping up 7 days a week at the market 11-8pm Monday-Friday and 10-8pm on Saturday & Sunday!

While you’re there, be sure to check out the other local vendors (tagged in this post) and the Market’s new Pine Bar for a pint or a cocktail crafted with local ingredients! The Pine Bar

It’s been a tough weekend, so let’s begin this week by nourishing ourselves. (Remember that writer and activist Audre Lorde spoke of radical self-care as a political act!)

This dish of wild rice with shiitake and bok choy was inspired by the incredible Crystal Dawn Culinary and made possible with local vegetables from Siena Farms.

We're here to remind you that we're a pickup location for the Siena Farms' CSA program! Now more than ever, we must support and protect local, sustainable farming. Siena Farms is a family-owned farm that cultivates 75 acres of farmland in Sudbury and Sterling, MA, all while not using chemical herbicides, pesticides, or synthetic fertilizers. They grow over 100 varieties of vegetables for their year-round CSA, farm stores, and select restaurants + chefs.

If you're trying to cut down on errands this summer, you can swing by the showroom for a visit and pick up your fresh produce at the same time –– just select us as your pickup location! Head to their site to learn more about what they do and how to sign up for a CSA membership of your own 🍅 sienafarms.com

LIVESTREAM SNEAK-PEEK!

Last week, we brought you a special episode starring vegetables from the fabulous regenerative farm Siena Farms. This week, we're diving deeper into our CSA box of delicious vegetables from Siena Farms! This box was packed to the brim with all kinds of produce ranging from leafy greens to root vegetables and Mother Zen could barely wait to start cooking with them!

We were so inspired by the unique ingredients in the boxes shared with us by the amazing Chef Ana Sortun of Oleana Restaurant, we wanted to teach people how to prepare easy meals with vegetables that might be unfamiliar. On Monday, we're teaching you a gorgeous veggie filled fall harvest soup!

Join Mother Zen (and Cambridge Keanu!) on Monday night in the kitchen as she makes a delicious vegetarian European soup featuring soy chorizo and spices from Turkey, with fried green tomatoes and a soy mayo sauce on the side!
Since March 2020, VietAID has distributed over 510,000 pounds (and that number continues to grow!) of fresh produce and staple goods to the community. We could not have done this without support from our incredible partners:

● Mayor's Office of Food Access
● Fair Foods
● YMCA of Greater Boston
● World Farmers / Flats Mentor Farm
● Siena Farms
● Project Restore Us

One of our partners, Flats Mentor Farm, has provided us Vietnamese and Asian produce for the last 2 growing seasons. Flat Mentor Farms works with immigrant and refugee farmers from across the globe. This year has been devastating with two floods, both unfortunate effects from climate change, that have impacted their production. We hope that you will consider donating to their Farmer Relief Effort!

● Tổ chức World Farmers/ Flat Mentor Farms

Grateful from our head to our tomaTOES to host Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources' 36th annual tomato contest! Congratulations to all the winners and participants including two of our very own in the “heaviest” category: Siena Farms (3rd place at 2.1lbs) and our Dewey Square Farmers Market vendor Kimball Fruit Farm (1st place at 2.55lbs!!)!
Unsliced tomatoes are donated to help feed our neighbors!
After a year hiatus, MDAR was thrilled to bring back our annual Massachusetts Tomato Contest earlier today outside at the Boston Public Market!

Our celebrity panel of judges sampled a wide variety of over 70 entrants that came from local farmers all across the Commonwealth where 6.3 million pounds of 🍅 are grown every year across 569 acres of land and 16 acres of greenhouses amounting to over $17 million in value!

Congrats to E. Cecchi Farms, Red Fire Farm, Freedom Food Farm, and Kimball Fruit Farm for taking home the top prize in their respective categories and congrats to Langwater Farm, Ward's Berry Farm, Greenhouse By The Sea, Russell Orchards, C&C Reading Farm, and Siena Farms for placing among the Top 3!

Special thanks to our partners for helping us make this year’s event another huge success: Berkshire Grown, CISA, SEMAP, Worcester Regional Food Hub, Grant Family Farm, Mass Farmers Markets, and the staff at the Boston Public Market for always being gracious hosts and providing logistical support. Last but not least, we are grateful to the New England Vegetable and Berry Growers' Association for sponsoring this event!

Right now, the time is ripe for Massachusetts grown tomatoes and other summertime crops so as always, use our MassGrown map to locate your closest farm or farmers market to pick up some plump juicy 🍅🍅🍅 to slice onto salads or burgers, or chop up to make a refreshing salsa or cook a simple marinara sauce!

We're excited to support our friends at Siena Farms and announce we've teamed up to act as a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) pickup site! CSA members can now stop by our showroom for fresh produce, all while supporting local, family-owned businesses.
