If carb counting feels like a guessing game, a food scale might be one of the most helpful tools you can add to your diabetes toolkit.

Nutrition labels and carb-counting apps are only accurate if you know how much you’re actually eating. Measuring cups can be helpful, but foods don’t always fit neatly into a cup. A food scale allows you to weigh foods like fruit, rice, pasta, potatoes, cereal, and chips for a more accurate carb count.

This can be especially helpful if you’re noticing unexpected blood sugar highs or lows after meals.
A few tips:
✔️ Weigh foods in grams when possible
✔️ Use nutrition apps or food databases that allow you to enter weights
✔️ Don’t stress about weighing everything forever…many people find they become much better at estimating portions over time

Remember: a food scale isn’t about being restrictive. It’s simply a tool that can help take some of the guesswork out of carb counting and support more predictable blood sugar management.

As a registered dietitian and someone who has lived with type 1 diabetes for almost 35 years, these are some of the pantry staples I always keep on hand. 🩵

Having foods that make balanced meals and snacks easy can take so much of the stress out of diabetes management.

✨ My diabetes pantry staples:
🥣 Oats – A great source of fiber and perfect for balanced breakfasts that support steady blood sugars. I love baking with ground up oats as well!
🌰 Almond flour – Lower in carbs than traditional flour and adds protein and healthy fats to baked goods.
🐟 Canned tuna – An easy, affordable protein that makes quick lunches and snacks simple.
🫘 Canned beans – Packed with fiber and plant protein to help support stable blood sugars
💚 Pistachios – One of my favorite snacks! They provide healthy fats, protein, and fiber for staying satisfied.
🍝 Bean pasta – Higher in protein and fiber than regular pasta, making it easier to build a blood sugar-friendly meal.
💪 Higher-fiber protein bars – Great for busy days when you need a convenient snack with staying power.
🍫 No sugar added chocolate chips – Perfect for adding a little sweetness to yogurt, oatmeal, or homemade treats without added sugar.
🍯 Honey packs – I always keep these stocked for treating low blood sugars. They’re portable, reliable, and easy to carry with me.

No food is magic, but having a well-stocked pantry can make eating for diabetes so much easier. 🙌

What’s one diabetes pantry staple you never run out of? ⬇️

Natural disasters, power outages, and emergencies are stressful enough… managing diabetes during them shouldn’t add even more stress.

One of the most important things you can do is create a diabetes emergency kit before you need it. 💙

✔️ Extra diabetes supplies and medications
✔️ Blood sugar testing supplies
✔️ Low blood sugar treatments
✔️ Shelf-stable food and water
✔️ Chargers, batteries, and backup power banks
✔️ Copies of prescriptions and important medical information

I recommend keeping enough supplies for at least 5–7 days and checking your kit at a minimum once/year to replace expired items and restock anything you’ve used.

Being prepared brings peace of mind… and you’ll be thankful you have it if an emergency ever happens.

Save this post for later and share it with someone living with diabetes! 👇

Oatmeal and diabetes: Can people with diabetes eat oatmeal?

Oatmeal is actually one of the better breakfast choices for many people with diabetes. It's packed with soluble fiber, especially beta-glucan, which helps slow digestion and may reduce blood sugar spikes.

But not all oatmeal is created equal. Instant flavored packets often contain added sugars and can raise blood glucose more quickly. Steel-cut or old-fashioned oats are usually better options because they're higher in fiber.

Want to make your oatmeal even more blood sugar-friendly? Add protein and healthy fats… like nuts, seeds, Greek yogurt, or a spoonful of peanut butter. And watch portion sizes, because even healthy carbs can raise your blood sugar more than you’d like.
✅ Choose less processed oats.✅ Skip added sugars.✅ Pair with protein and healthy fats.
Bottom line: Oatmeal can absolutely fit into a diabetes-friendly diet when prepared the right way.

🏊‍♀️ SWIMMING WITH DIABETES DEVICES: TIPS FOR A SAFER SUMMER ☀️

Swimming with a CGM or insulin pump can feel stressful at first, especially during hot summer months. Between water exposure, sweat, sunscreen, heat, and activity levels, there are a few extra things to think about… but you CAN still enjoy the pool, beach, lake days, and vacations safely.

Here are some important reminders:

💧 Not all diabetes devices are fully waterproof. Many pumps and CGMs are water-resistant only for certain depths and time limits. Always double check your manufacturer’s recommendations before swimming or spending long periods in the water.

☀️ Heat matters too. Insulin and diabetes supplies can become damaged in high temperatures or direct sunlight. Avoid leaving devices, insulin, or supplies in hot cars or pool bags sitting in the sun.

🏃‍♀️ Swimming can affect blood sugar levels. Because swimming is exercise, some people may experience blood sugar drops during or after swimming. Others may notice temporary increases depending on intensity, stress hormones, or disconnecting from a pump.

🩹 Adhesives may not hold as well in water. Sweat, sunscreen, chlorine, saltwater, and movement can loosen sensors or infusion sites more quickly.

Helpful swimming tips for diabetes devices:
✔️ Use overpatches, adhesive wipes, or skin prep products
✔️ Bring backup sensors, infusion sets, or supplies
✔️ Keep quick carbs nearby in case of lows
✔️ Monitor blood sugar more frequently around swim time
✔️ Stay hydrated …even while swimming
✔️ Talk with your healthcare team about pump disconnection or insulin adjustments if needed

Most importantly: don’t let diabetes stop you from enjoying summer activities. A little planning can go a long way toward helping you feel more confident and prepared.

☕ DOES COFFEE RAISE BLOOD SUGAR? The answer is… it depends. 👀

Some people notice little to no blood sugar change after drinking coffee, while others may experience a noticeable spike… even with plain black coffee. Why?

Caffeine can stimulate stress hormones, which may temporarily increase insulin resistance and cause the liver to release more glucose into the bloodstream. For some people, this can lead to higher blood sugar levels after coffee.

But everyone responds differently. Genetics, sleep, stress, hormones, insulin sensitivity, and even the time of day can all play a role.

One thing that may help? 👉 Adding protein to your coffee.

Including protein alongside caffeine can help slow digestion, support steadier energy levels, and reduce the likelihood of a sharper blood sugar spike for some people.

A few easy ways to add protein to coffee:
✔️ Protein shakes or protein milk
✔️ Collagen peptides
✔️ Milk
✔️ Pairing coffee with a high-protein breakfast

The biggest takeaway: your body’s response to coffee is individual. Paying attention to your own patterns can help you decide what works best for YOU.
