Today on Gilmer Family Farm:
We made our feeding rounds first thing this morning, bred a heifer, and put paint stripes on the rumps on the rest of the cattle in our current breeding group. Afterward we turned two different groups of cows & calves into grazing paddocks and then spent the rest of the day finishing the fence around the pasture where we’ll graze recently weaned heifer calves. They should start getting their fill of ryegrass and clover tomorrow morning.

Today on Gilmer Family Farm:

The morning started before sunrise as we loaded up two 1200lb steers and hauled them to Hayes Meat Processing in Walker County. We made the feed rounds once we got back and tagged a new heifer calf born overnight. The remainder of the day was spent setting fence posts around a field of ryegrass/clover in preparation for weaned heifers grazing it over the next 4-6 weeks.

It was 70° yesterday, so of course it’s snowing this morning.

2pm Saturday: Someone has a black bull roaming around where Gunter Road crosses Beaver Creek Road. If you know someone who has cattle in the area (besides us, it’s not ours), please let them know.

From feeding cattle to repairing equipment, we’re doing a little bit of everything on the farm this time of year.
