🫣SPOILER: I am NOT going to say Dorper.
I chose Dorper.
You might too...
But whenever I'm asked: "What the best breed of sheep to raise?", I don't give a breed; I give "3 rules".
#1️⃣: Know your climate and get to know local flocks (if they exist).

#2️⃣: Decide what your goals are. Meat? Milk? Wool Hobby? Intensive system?

#3️⃣ ALWAYS choose quality. It's going to pay you back really fast.
🎙️🎙if you are looking for 9 breeds to start your research with, lookup my latest podcast episode (search "the Shepherdess" on iTunes and Spotify). I give suggestions for Meat, Milk, and Wool breeds.
Me? I chose the Dorper. WHY? Meaty carcass on grass, hair coat instead of wool, great mothers, and MORE.
Which breed do you raise and WHY?
I hope this perspective helps!

RULE-BREAKER is not a title I want.
So when I started farming I tried my hardest to find exact formulas, precise outlines, and step-by-step rules to follow for raising my flock.
BIG SURPRISE: I didn't find any precise formulas.
I found a TON of great advice, I sought A LOT of good counsel, and I made my own step-by step plans.
And I followed the rules.
But guess what? I also had to make some of my own rules.
I graze regeneratively AND use conventional dewormers.
I don't baby my flock, but I will spend hours nursing a sheep back to health when necessary.
I lamb on pasture, but I don't hesitate to assist during labor.
I had to apply best practice AND learn the hard way.
Bottom line: don't feel bad if you have to make some of your own rules.
Farming is not a formula.
