Coffee Cake, Kuchen or Gugelhupf was originally a sweetened yeast bread appreciated by the Germans, Dutch and Scandinavians.

Early recipes were enriched breads composed of yeast, flour, eggs, sugar, nuts, dried fruit and sweet spices occasionally topped with Streusel or crumb toppings. Coffee cake recipes eventually changed to sugared fruit, cheese, yogurt and other creamy fillings.
