Fall has finally arrived in South Carolina. With fewer hours of daylight, egg production has slowed. This is a natural occurrence as egg production is dependent on having enough photon hours. At this time, I am no longer taking new egg orders. This fall and winter, the hens will rest from their busy spring and summer days where we benefitted from an abundance of eggs. In the past, I have used lights in their coop to artificially extend the laying season as long as possible. This year they will rest and enjoy a break. I typically have a lot of new spring pullets that also carry me through the winter without too much of a drop in eggs. Unfortunately, many of my new birds succumbed to illness and I don't have their extra eggs to fall back on.
This time of year, we celebrate all that we have and give thanks for all the goodness in our lives. I am grateful for a community that has supported our little hobby farm and allowed me to keep "chicken tending" by continually purchasing all these beautiful eggs.
Thank you
๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿณ๐Ÿ“๐Ÿฅš
Eggs will be back in the early spring and I look forward to providing more fresh eggs as soon as I can! Follow us on social media for updates!

Sean has been working with the cows on halter training. He was able to get the harness on Evelyn this week! Being able to put a halter on them will make it easier to work on the cows when they need vaccinations or any other care, rather than holding them in a cattle chute.

Meet Evelyn ๐Ÿฎ She is also from Down Home Longhorns and arrived on Saturday. She likes to make mean faces and is very vocal, but is actually very sweet and has warmed up to us quite a bit this week. Sean works with both girls daily and is planning to halter train them! Welcome to Cool Blow, Evelyn!

Summer is winding down and it's been a hot one ๐Ÿ”ฅ. I lost 2 of my wonderful black copper marans to the heat this year and another young pullet to a hawk just the other day. Many of my other hens have also started their annual molt. These hens won't start laying again for a few months when they have recovered from molting. With egg production slowing, I will officially be moving to just 1 egg pick-up day a week. The day will fluctuate depending on the number of orders I have and what is available. Please know I will do my best to fill orders but will be limited by supply. Orders will be limited to 2 dozen. As always, text Marie at 843-324-4774 to reserve eggs. Thank you!

The Cottage at Cool Blow is dressed up for Christmas. I didn't have time to get this finished by the deadline for the
door contest, but it was the inspiration behind the design. Using the beauty of what we find in nature to decorate brings life to a time of year that is sometimes less vibrant. Some simple evergreen branches and Christmas poinsettias are the perfect match for this soft blue door. Follow to see how the town of Summerville is celebrating Christmas and their 175th year. ๐ŸŽ…๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒธ

08/23/2022

Two weeks ago, I came home after work and let the dog (Rooster) out in the yard like I always do. He immediately rushed over to the coop on high alert. That old hound dog caught the scent of something and began circling a nearby shed. I bent down to peek underneath and came face to face with a scrawny little fox, not much bigger than our cats. It took off running and Rooster and I chased it 400 feet down the driveway, across the road and into the woods. It wasn't until returning to the coop that I discovered the damage. The fox had killed 3 hens and injured a 4th. I held the 4th hen, her body shaking and in shock until she passed away. Later I found my black copper marans rooster (The Colonel) cowering in a corner of the hen house. He was beat up pretty bad but I didn't know the extent of the damage until the next day. I was shocked he made it through the night and was sure he would succumb to his wounds. I started saving eggs to incubate just in case I needed to replace him. We set up a little hospital for him on the porch, gave him antibiotics, cleaned his wounds, and used a syringe to force him to drink. He had puncture wounds all over his chest and back. The Colonel didn't eat for 7 days. He only drank water when I forced him to and he slept most of the time. 1 week after the attack, Sean saw him get up on his own and begin to eat. On day 8 he started crowing again ๐Ÿ˜Š. Yesterday, he escaped his hospital quarters and tried to return to his flock...but he's not quite strong enough yet. Maybe this weekend he can get back to guarding his ladies. For now, the electric fence is up ๐ŸฆŠ

08/22/2022

It's been over a week since we officially moved out of the cabin and into the new cottage at Cool Blow. It was an enormous amount of work, as all moving is, even though it was just a few hundred feet down the driveway. We are still unpacking, cleaning and organizing. The new cottage is bright and clean and new. Such a change from the old dusty and drafty cabin (which I still adore btw). The dog and cats are slowly adjusting but still a little lost at times. When all else fails, home is where they feed you. They will figure it out ๐Ÿ˜Š. Kids are loving their new space and decorating their rooms. We are all overjoyed to finally have a 2nd bathroom and probably most excited about having a dishwasher again!
Very thankful to for making this happen for us and providing guidance along the way. Lots of hard work put in by Travis and his team. An amazing project that we are all very proud of. And...onto the next project...after we get some much needed rest!
