Beef Prices Expected to Stay High for Years, Experts Say

Beef prices are projected to remain high — and even rise further — over the next few years, according to agricultural experts. The main cause isn’t politics but biology: the U.S. cattle herd is at its lowest level in 70 years due to years of drought and the slow process of rebuilding livestock numbers.

Experts say political blame doesn’t match reality. Droughts, long production cycles, and uncertainty in the cattle industry have slowed herd recovery far more than tariffs or policy decisions. Even rolling back beef import tariffs will only slightly affect ground beef prices — and most consumers may not notice a difference at all.

Ground beef could hit $10 per pound by 2026, and real price relief likely won’t arrive until late 2027. Until then, steak and beef prices are expected to stay high with very little anyone can do in the short term.

Plans are underway to coordinate a fall calf pen as part of the 2025 Hereford Feedout Program at HRC Feed Yards in Scott City, Kan. If you have fall-born calves and are interested in participating, we encourage you to review the program guidelines and complete the enrollment form by May 15.
