Polk Creek Farm

Polk Creek Farm Katahdin Sheep Katahdin sheep are a wonderful, easy care sheep, which is why we love raising them! They are very parasite resistant and rarely need to be wormed.

They have hair coats instead of the traditional wool coat, so there is no hassle with shearing, or crutching, and no need to dock tails. In fact, we have only wormed the entire herd twice. Katahdins also have a much less muttony taste than many of the wool breeds, and are a delicious dining experience.

She’s such a smart and calm little cutie ❤️ This is Betty B’s first time loading and unloading on command. Yesterday, I threw a couple of flakes of alfalfa in the trailer to get her to hang out in there and desensitize herself. She hopped right in and didn’t seem bothered, but I left her alone anyway so that she could get used to the trailer without any pressure from me. Today we loaded and unloaded 20 times, then called it a day.

Betty B, learning to stand tied. The rope is looped over the hitching post so she won’t hurt herself if she pulls back. I want her to stand tied because I have asked her to do so, not because she can’t get away and has no other option. With horses, it’s all about trust and the partnership you build with them. She just turned 4 on Jan 1st, so I think she will be staying a large kid’s pony. Leif has volunteered to ride her once we start saddle training, since he is just her size.

Promzilla is an 18 yo paint/qh/Arabian mare looking for a good home. I haven’t measured her, but she is probably close to 16hh, and stout. She has foundered in the past but is w/t/c sound in the pasture now, and our farrier thinks she would be fine for light riding and arena riding. Would be great as a lead line horse for a child. MUST have a dry lot or very short/ poor pasture to put her in as her problem is that she is too easy of a keeper and gets obese leading to the foot problems. Needs a tune up but no major issues. Haven’t loaded her in a trailer yet but I will work on that this week. Very VERY negotiable to the right home.

The rain and cooler weather have given the ponies the zoomies 😍

We’ve gone 2 years without having to worm the ladies. I think our genetics are making strides in the right direction.
